Kamigamo Shrine
Kamigamo Shrine, located in Kita Ward, Kyoto City, formally Kamowakeikazuchi Shrine, is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. It is also registered as a component of the World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." Its enshrined deity, Kamowakeikazuchi-no-Okami, has long drawn the veneration of the imperial court and samurai families as a god of warding off all calamities, of good fortune, and of victory.
Highlights
- Tatezuna (Sand Cones): A pair of cone-shaped sand mounds before the Hosodono hall. Shaped after the sacred Mount Koyama, they are known as purifying sand. - Nara-no-Ogawa Stream: The pure stream flowing through the grounds is cool in summer, making a stroll along it a pleasant time. It is an elegant scenic spot sung of in classical poetry. - Solemn Halls: With the main hall and gonden, both National Treasures, beautiful cypress-bark-roofed halls stand in a row, conveying a dignity befitting a World Heritage Site.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring, the cherry blossoms in the grounds and along the nearby Kamo River embankment are splendid. In May it is the setting of the Aoi Festival, one of Kyoto's three great festivals, where an elegant procession is the highlight. In summer you can find cool relief at the Nara-no-Ogawa stream, and in autumn enjoy the foliage. The spacious grounds allow for leisurely worship throughout the year.

This is a prestigious ancient shrine perfect for those praying to ward off misfortune or for good fortune. The "Both Kamo pilgrimage," worshipping together with Shimogamo Shrine, is also recommended. Visiting during the Aoi Festival (May) lets you enjoy an elegant procession like a Heian picture scroll. As the grounds are spacious, wear comfortable shoes.
