Shimogamo Shrine

Shimogamo Shrine, located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, formally Kamomioya Shrine, is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto alongside Kamigamo Shrine. A component of the World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto," its grounds, embraced by the ancient primeval Tadasu Forest, are known as one of Kyoto purest power spots.

Highlights

- Aioi Shrine: A subordinate shrine famous as a deity of matchmaking. It has the sacred tree "Renri-no-Sakaki," in which two trees merge into one partway up, and it bustles with worshippers wishing for good matches. - Tadasu Forest: A primeval forest covering about 120,000 square meters. Just walking the approach where dappled sunlight filters through brings a refreshing feeling that seems to cleanse the heart. - Kawai Shrine: A subordinate shrine known for prayers for beauty. The "mirror votive plaques," hand-mirror-shaped plaques you decorate with makeup as you wish, are popular among women.

Enjoying the Seasons

The Tadasu Forest is beautiful throughout the year, with splendid fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, and colorful foliage in autumn. Seasonal rites are also highlights, such as the Aoi Festival in May and the Mitarashi Festival in summer. The shade-rich grounds are cool even in summer, allowing for worship while strolling at leisure.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: 59 Shimogamo-izumigawa-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture - Access: About a 12-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan line, or just outside the "Shimogamo-jinja-mae" city bus stop - Hours: Grounds open freely (shrine office staffed during the day) - Admission: Free for the grounds (special viewing of the Oidono and others charges a fee)

A Quick Tip

For matchmaking, the Aioi Shrine is recommended; for becoming beautiful, the mirror votive plaques of Kawai Shrine. As the Tadasu Forest approach is long, wear comfortable shoes. Doing the Both Kamo pilgrimage together with Kamigamo Shrine lets you fully feel the energy of Kyoto oldest sacred precincts.
