Toba Aquarium and Mikimoto Pearl Island Seaside Stroll Course

Known as the birthplace of pearl cultivation, Toba is a port town that has lived alongside the sea. Toba Aquarium, one of the largest in Japan, and Mikimoto Pearl Island, which tells the story of pearls, both sit within walking distance of Toba Station, so you can wander between them with the sea breeze on your face.

Course Route

9:30 Start at Toba Aquarium Just a short walk from Toba Station, this aquarium is said to keep one of the largest number of species in the country, with a dugong, fishing cats, sea otters, and many more. There is no fixed route, so you can explore freely from wherever you like.

11:30 Enjoy the Walrus and Sea Lion Shows The performances and hands-on programs run on set times, so check the schedule when you enter.

12:30 Lunch in the Port Town Savor Toba seafood for lunch. Shops serving fresh fish and shellfish are scattered around the station.

13:30 On to Mikimoto Pearl Island Within walking range of Toba Station, cross a bridge to a small island floating in the bay. This is the commemorative island where Kokichi Mikimoto, called the Pearl King, first succeeded in cultivating pearls.

14:00 Pearl Museum and Ama Diver Demonstration Learn how pearls form and see fine artworks made with them. On the island you can also watch a diving demonstration by ama divers in their traditional white garments.

15:30 Finish with a Seaside Walk Stroll the island and the harbor, taking in views of Ise Bay to close out the course.

Highlights

The star of Toba Aquarium is the dugong, a sea creature said to be the model for mermaid legends and a rare sight found nowhere else in Japan. At Mikimoto Pearl Island you can touch both the history of pearl cultivation and ama diver culture. The diving demonstration is a scene unique to Toba, a town that has lived with the sea.

Access and Tips

Both spots are walkable from Kintetsu and JR Toba Station. Seeing both takes more than half a day, so starting in the morning is recommended. Diver demonstrations and shows run on fixed schedules, so checking the times first and planning around them helps you move efficiently.

A Quick Tip

The seafront can be windy on some days, so a light jacket to throw on is reassuring. Toba is close to Ise Jingu, so pairing it with an Ise pilgrimage over an overnight stay is a great option.
