Naruko Onsen Village

Cradled by the Ou Mountains, Naruko Onsen is one of Tohoku's signature hot spring destinations, sending plumes of steam into the sky in the highlands of Osaki. The area is said to gather a great many of the spring types found across Japan, making bath hopping a true pleasure. It is also cherished as the home of the warm, wooden Naruko kokeshi dolls.

Highlights

The distinctive appeal here is soaking in waters that differ from inn to inn, from milky white to amber tones. Strolling the streets, you will find public bathhouses and free foot baths scattered about, perfect for a wander in wooden clogs. At kokeshi workshops you can even try painting your own doll as a keepsake of the trip.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings fresh greenery, and summer offers the cool breeze of the highlands. Autumn sets the nearby Naruko Gorge ablaze with fiery foliage. In winter, open-air baths amid the snow are especially memorable, the white scenery contrasting beautifully with the warmth of the water.

Access and Basic Information

Naruko Onsen Station on the JR Rikuu East Line is the gateway, with inns and shops clustered nearby. Coming from the Sendai area by car is convenient too, following mountain roads from the Furukawa interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

A Quick Tip

Because the waters vary greatly in composition, it is best to enjoy them gradually while watching out for over bathing. A bath hopping pass helps you make the rounds efficiently.
