Nakayamadaira Onsen

Welling up at the western edge of the Naruko hot spring village, Nakayamadaira is renowned for its uniquely slippery feel on the skin. So smooth is the water that it has earned the nickname unagi-yu, meaning eel bath, and many are surprised by how silky their skin feels after a soak.

Highlights

The sensation of the alkaline water enveloping the skin is an experience found only here. Inns are scattered through the quiet mountain setting, and in open-air baths surrounded by trees you can feel wonderfully at one with nature. The scenic Naruko Gorge lies close by as well.

Enjoying the Seasons

In autumn the neighboring Naruko Gorge turns crimson, and the foliage coloring the ravine ranks among the finest in Tohoku. Winter offers quiet bathing in snow-draped open-air baths, while spring through summer brings fresh greenery that is easy on the eyes.

Access and Basic Information

Nakayamadaira Onsen Station on the JR Rikuu East Line is the nearest stop, close to Naruko Onsen Station as well. By car, head toward Naruko from the Furukawa interchange on the Tohoku Expressway and follow the mountain roads.

A Quick Tip

The smooth water may tempt you to linger, but it is easy to overheat, so take breaks now and then. The foliage season is crowded, so planning ahead is recommended.
