Matsushima Onsen

Welling up at Matsushima, counted among Japan's three great scenic spots, this spa enjoys a blessed setting where you can bathe while overlooking a beautiful bay dotted with islands large and small. The luxury of enjoying celebrated scenery and hot springs at the same time draws many travelers.

Highlights

From the view baths of hilltop inns, the islands scattered across Matsushima Bay stretch out in a single vista. The seascape colored by dawn and dusk is especially beautiful, so much so that you may lose track of time gazing at it. Taking in the Matsushima scenery while soaking is a luxurious experience found only here.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring offers a calm sea and cherry blossoms, summer a refreshing sea breeze, autumn the islands amid clear air, and winter the quiet mood of the bay, each giving Matsushima a different face. A fine way to spend the day is to tour the islands by sightseeing boat before slipping into the bath.

Access and Basic Information

Matsushimakaigan Station on the JR Senseki Line is the nearest stop, reachable by train from Sendai Station. By car it is close to the Matsushimakaigan interchange on the Sanriku Expressway, making it easy to combine sightseeing with bath hopping.

A Quick Tip

Matsushima has many sights such as Zuiganji Temple and Godaido Hall, so staying overnight alongside sightseeing is recommended. The sea-facing baths are especially wonderful at dusk.
