Tsuno Shrine Grand Festival

The grand festival held every July is a major summer sacred rite where you can feel its history and dignity with your own skin. The Night Kagura of Takachiho

Access About 2 hours 30 minutes by Miyazaki Kotsu bus from within Miyazaki City to the Takachiho Bus Center. The bus route from Nobeoka Station is also convenient (about 1 hour 20 minutes). By private car, about 1 hour 30 minutes via National Route 218 from the "Kumamoto IC" on the Kyushu Expressway. Since it's a mountainous area, beware of snowfall and freezing in winter.

• For the regular performances, inquiring with Takachiho Shrine in advance is recommended (subject to change due to weather and events)
• The mountainous area at night gets cold even in summer, so be sure to bring an outer layer you can put on
• Check the latest information on hamlet kagura on the "Takachiho Town Tourism Association" website or at the local tourist information center
• Lodging fills up early, centered on weekends, so booking 2-3 months in advance is ideal

The Pepper Dance (Nobeoka Daishi Festival)

To those who thought "why peppers?" — that very question is the door to the charm of the Nobeoka Daishi Festival. Nobeoka City is one of Japan's leading green pepper producers. The unique local dance expressing that pride with the whole body vividly colors the spring Daishi Festival. This festival, held every March, is a spring tradition unique to Nobeoka, fusing a historic sacred rite with a lively, citizen-participation dance.

The citizens' dance, centered on the "Nobeoka Sonomama Dance," is an open festival in which men and women, young and old, from children to adults, take part. The distance between the spectator seats and the dancers is close, and before you know it you've been drawn into the dance circle yourself — there are not a few travelers with such experiences to tell. If you move your body together with the smiling Nobeoka citizens amid the cheerful southern spring weather, your travel memories will gain one more.

Access Held in the urban area within walking distance of "Nobeoka Station" on the JR Nippo Main Line. About 1 hour 10 minutes by limited express "Nichirin" from Miyazaki Station. Access from Miyazaki Airport is also good, about 1 hour 30 minutes if using a rental car.

• There are already days with strong sunshine in March Miyazaki. Don't forget UV protection
• Since it's held in the urban area, parking lots tend to be crowded, so using public transportation is recommended
• If you plan a route combining Miyazaki's standard spots such as "Takachiho Gorge" or "Aoshima Shrine" before or after the festival, you'll have a fulfilling Miyazaki trip

Tsuno Shrine Summer Grand Festival, the first shrine of Hyuga Province (2026)

• Dates: Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August 2026
• Timetable: 1 August, 8:30 the rite of setting out, 10:00 the palanquin leaves the great east torii, 16:40 arrival at the Kitamachi resting place and the arrival rite / 2 August, 12:00 the departure rite at the resting place, 12:40 departure, 19:00 the return rite (the climax)
• Venue: Tsuno Shrine (13294 Kawakita, Tsuno Town, Koyu District, Miyazaki Prefecture) and the whole town, for the sacred procession
• Food stalls: stalls are set up

Takachiho Kagura for visitors (all year round)

• Performances: a one-hour performance every evening, 20:00-21:00. There are no performances on 31 December and 1 January, or on 22 and 23 November each year (because of the Takachiho Night Kagura Festival)
• Venue: the Kagura hall in the grounds of Takachiho Shrine (809-1 Mitai, Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki 882-1101)
• Admission: 1,000 yen for adults, free for elementary school children and younger, 900 yen per person for groups of 20 or more
• Booking: online booking runs from 10:00 thirty days before the performance until 17:00 on the day, with a capacity of 230. Same-day registration opens at 19:30 for only 50 to 60 places, so booking online is recommended if you want to be sure of a seat
• Parking: about 100 spaces, free
• Programme: four representative dances out of the 33 (Tajikarao, Uzume, Totori and Goshintai)

Nobeoka Imayama Daishi Festival ("Odaishi-san")

• Dates: in 2026, Friday 17 to Sunday 19 April (in a normal year, three days in mid-April). It is one of the three great spring festivals of Kyushu
• Timetable (as held in 2026): 17 April 13:00 the opening service / 18 April 12:00 and 14:30 the scattering of lucky rice cakes / 19 April 10:00 the main service, 11:30 and 14:00 the scattering of lucky rice cakes
• Venue: around Imayama Daishi (Imayama Daishi temple), 2-3998 Yamashita, Nobeoka City, Miyazaki 882-0055
• Nearest station: about a 15-minute walk from JR Nobeoka Station
• Parking: the free car park on the Furukawa riverbank, about 400 spaces
• Shuttles: a free shuttle bus (18 April 9:00-18:00, 19 April 9:00-17:00) and a shuttle taxi at 200 yen per person (17-19 April, 9:00-17:00)
