Takachiho Gorge and Takachiho Shrine Half Day Model Course
Tucked into the mountains of northern Miyazaki, Takachiho is a village where the myths of the descent of the heavenly grandson still feel alive. The columnar-jointed gorge, carved by ancient volcanic flows from Mount Aso, and the clear waters of Manai Falls are sights worth seeing at least once. This course walks you from the gorge promenade to the venerable Takachiho Shrine in half a day, with gentle walking distances that make it ideal for a first visit.
Course Route
9:00 Start at Takachiho Gorge Begin along the promenade that follows the ravine, taking in the sheer rock walls as you set off.
9:30 View Manai Falls About seventeen meters high, Manai Falls is the signature view of Takachiho. Rent a rowboat toward the plunge pool for the special experience of looking up at the falls from the water.
10:30 Onokoro Pond and promenade stroll Wander around Onokoro Pond on the upstream side of the walkway, where quiet minutes pass beneath dappled sunlight.
11:30 Head to Takachiho Shrine Just a few minutes by car from the gorge, Takachiho Shrine sits among thousand-year cedars and is known for blessings of love and marital harmony.
12:00 Visit Takachiho Shrine After paying respects at the main hall, explore highlights such as the Shizume-ishi stone and the married cedar trees to round off the half-day course.
Highlights
Manai Falls is the star of the show. Falling against columnar rock faces, the water shifts in character with the angle of the light. If you plan to take a boat, note that reservations can close early in busy seasons, so the first hour of the day is safest. At Takachiho Shrine, the air along the approach lined with towering old cedars is wonderful, inviting a quiet moment of prayer.
Access and Tips
Takachiho has no railway, so from Miyazaki City or the Kumamoto direction, highway buses or cars are the norm. From Miyazaki Station it is roughly two hours and forty minutes by highway bus. The area around the gorge has many slopes, so wear comfortable shoes for the climbs to and from the parking lots. Fresh green in April and May and autumn foliage in October and November are especially beautiful.
A Quick Tip
If half a day feels too short, extend into a full day by adding Amano Iwato Shrine and Amanoyasukawara in the afternoon. It deepens this journey through myth even further.
