In Takachiho, a town where the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandson lives on, Takachiho Onsen wells up on the heights. It is a day use hot spring set in a spot overlooking the home of the gods, where you can enjoy bathing together with the clear air of the mountains. It is also cherished as a base for touring famous sites such as Takachiho Gorge.

Highlights

The hypotonic mildly alkaline simple spring has a soft feel that blends into the body and is said to be good for nerve pain, muscle pain, and easing fatigue. From the spacious open air bath set on the heights you can take in the townscape of Takachiho and the ranks of surrounding mountains, a majestic view fitting for a land of myth. With a dry sauna, a mist sauna, and a warm water pool, families can spend a leisurely time here.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the mountain village is wrapped in fresh buds, and in summer the coolness of high altitude Takachiho is delightful. Autumn colors the surrounding mountains vividly, and the foliage seen from the open air bath is splendid. In winter, amid the clear air, a sea of clouds sometimes spreads out, letting you meet a dreamlike scene from within the warmth.

Access and Basic Information

Access is basically by car, about an hour from Nobeoka City via National Route 218, and about an hour and a half from Kumamoto City. It is only a few minutes by bus from Takachiho Bus Center, so it is easy to reach by public transport too. It is a day use facility with parking for about one hundred cars and is closed every Thursday. When Thursday falls on a holiday it closes the following day instead. There is a rest room to relax in and a shop after bathing.

A Quick Tip

Combining it with a stroll through Takachiho Gorge or a viewing of the night kagura lets you enjoy the land of myth for a full day. Mornings and evenings in the mountains grow cold, so keeping a layer to slip on after your bath brings peace of mind.
