The recommended time is early morning to late morning. The moment the morning sun begins to illuminate the mountainside at an angle, the colors of the foliage blaze up all the more vividly, and the entire area is wrapped in a mysterious glow. Being able to monopolize that morning sight by staying the night before in a tent or mountain hut is the greatest reward given only to those who put in the physical effort to climb.

As a way to enjoy it like a local, do stop by the terrace of Karasawa Hutte. Access

From Matsumoto Station, take an Alpico Kotsu bus to the Kamikochi Bus Terminal (about 1 hour 15 min). From the Kamikochi Bus Terminal, it's a climbing course of about 6-7 hours one way to Karasawa, passing Kappabashi, Myojin, and Tokusawa. The walking distance is about 16 km one way and the cumulative elevation gain is about 800m, a tough route, so it's important to get your body used to it beforehand. Those confident in their stamina should ideally stay the night before locally and depart early the next morning. Plan with plenty of margin over a schedule of one night, two days or more.

Tip for travelers

During the foliage season, both Karasawa Hutte and Karasawa Goya are flooded with reservations. Reservations at both huts open on the morning of the date one month before your stay, at 8:00 a.m. Book on that exact day—this is a must. Those considering tent camping should also note that the campsite is first-come, so arriving early is the rule. Climbing shoes, rainwear, and warm clothing (fleece + down) are essential equipment. Mornings and evenings can drop to near freezing, so entering the mountain in light clothing is strictly forbidden. Also properly prepare basic climbing gear such as trail food, emergency rations, and a headlamp before departing. Kamikochi

From Matsumoto Station, it's about 1 hour 15 min by Alpico Kotsu bus to the Kamikochi Bus Terminal. From the Nagoya, Osaka, and Shinjuku directions, direct highway buses also run, giving access without transfers. If coming by car, park at the Sawando parking lot (700–800 yen per day for an ordinary car; note that the official site lists both figures and the exact rate should be confirmed) and transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi for about 30 minutes; the shuttle between Sawando and the Kamikochi Bus Terminal costs 3,000 yen round trip or 1,600 yen one way. Coming from the Gifu and Takayama side, the equivalent base is the Hirayu Akandana parking lot (600 yen per 24 hours, shuttle 2,800 yen round trip or 1,500 yen one way). Using an early-morning service lets you enjoy a quiet Kamikochi before the crowds.

Tip for travelers

On peak-foliage weekends, the national highway heading to the Sawando parking lot can become heavily congested from early morning. Visiting on a weekday, or even on weekends making use of the first bus (5 a.m. hour from Matsumoto Station), is strongly recommended. Because Kamikochi is at about 1,500m elevation, there are days in late October when the minimum temperature drops below 5°C. Preparing layerable warm clothing such as fleece and a down jacket is essential. Also, dining facilities within Kamikochi are limited in number even during the season, and lines can form at lunchtime. Finishing your meal early, or bringing trail food, gives peace of mind. As Kamikochi's closing (usually mid-November) approaches, the operation of lodging facilities ends in turn, so those wishing to stay should reserve early.

Shiga Kogen

Not as famous as Kamikochi or Karasawa Cirque, and precisely for that reason still strongly retaining the face of a "known only to those in the know" hidden gem, is Shiga Kogen. This highland, famous as an international ski resort, transforms completely in autumn into a tranquil and profound foliage paradise. Rather than a flashy, blazing intensity, there are scattered high-altitude marshes and foliage reflected in mirror-like pond ponds, and vast forests of beech and maple dyeing into gold and deep crimson—what's here is a moist beauty that seeps into the soul. For those seeking a journey to face nature head-on in a silence far from crowds, Shiga Kogen is without doubt the optimal choice.

The best season is early to late October. What you especially want to see is the Kidoike, Hasuike, and Maruike area. The reflection of foliage clearly mirrored on the lake surface is most beautiful in the windless early morning, and standing at the pondside in the morning with no wind and no people, you'll feel as if time is melting away. Also, Shibu Pass (2,172m elevation) is a spectacular spot known as the highest point on a Japanese national highway. The panorama woven by the reddish-brown of the grass foliage spreading around and the mountain ranges stretching far into the distance is filled with an openness that makes you want to breathe deeply. Using a rental car that lets you freely tour the highland is the best way to fully enjoy Shiga Kogen. Note that the road toward Shibu Pass has periods when it is closed due to snow, so be sure to check road information before visiting.

Tip for travelers

Because Shiga Kogen has constraints on access by public transport alone, using a rental car is the key to a comfortable trip. There are several rental car shops around Nagano Station, so make use of them to suit your travel plan. The roads within the highland are prone to frost in the early morning and evening, and from mid-October onward in particular, caution against skidding is needed. Since morning and evening temperatures can drop to near 0°C in late October, take thorough warmth measures. Also, because reservations concentrate at lodging facilities toward the foliage season, securing a booking at least 1-2 months in advance gives peace of mind. Relatively hidden though it is, popular inns on peak weekends fill quickly.

If you have stamina and time to spare, the royal-road, fulfilling course is to make climbing Karasawa Cirque the axis, then leisurely stroll Kamikochi the next day. For those who prefer a relaxed trip, a 2-3 day itinerary combining a Shiga Kogen drive and an overnight stay is perfect.

Practical Information for the Autumn Foliage Season (Based on Official Announcements)

No Private Vehicles Allowed in Kamikochi

The prefectural road leading into Kamikochi (Kamikochi Koen-sen) is subject to a private vehicle ban along its entire length from the Kamatunnel entrance. In 2026, the mountain-open season runs from 17 April to 15 November, and the ban applies throughout this period. Only buses, taxis, bicycles, and other light vehicles are permitted; private cars, rental cars, and motorcycles are not allowed. Permitted hours are 5:00–19:00 from April to June and September to November (5:00–20:00 in July and August); from 16 November until the following spring the road is closed entirely (mountain-closed season). This restriction has been in place since 1975 (Showa 50), and for 2026 no restriction days have been set for sightseeing buses.

Sawando and Akandana Car Parks, and When They Fill Up During Foliage Season

※ The Sawando parking fee is listed as both ¥700 and ¥800 on the Kamikochi official website, so a definitive figure cannot be given. Please check the official site for the latest information.

The Kamikochi official website states explicitly that Sawando car parks "may fill up as early as 8:00–9:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays during Golden Week, Obon, and the autumn foliage season." Matsumoto City publishes live camera feeds updated every 10 minutes at three points near the Sawando-ohashi bus stop, so you can check congestion levels both before you set out and along the way. From Matsumoto IC to Sawando is approximately 1 hour; from Takayama IC to Akandana is approximately 45 minutes.

If you use a taxi, the fixed fare from Sawando to Kamikochi Bus Terminal is ¥5,400–¥6,000 (varies by vehicle type and zone; last pick-up at 18:00). From Akandana, the one-way fare is up to ¥6,000, plus a separate Abo Tunnel toll of ¥1,580.

Regarding bus reservations: the Ministry of the Environment's 2026 announcement designates the Shin-Shimashima Station–Kamikochi route as reservation-only, whereas Alpico Kotsu describes the same route as a "reservation-priority system (passengers may board on a first-come, first-served basis if seats are available)" and excludes the Sawando area–Kamikochi route from the reservation requirement. In practical terms, it is accurate to understand that direct services from Shin-Shimashima require a reservation or are reservation-priority, while shuttle buses from Sawando and Hirayu need no reservation.

Day-Tripping to Karasawa Cirque Is Not Possible

From Kamikochi Bus Terminal to Karasawa, passing through Myojin, Tokusawa, and Yokoo, is roughly 6 hours or more one way (approximately 2 hours from Yokoo to Karasawa). Buses for Kamikochi do not run before 5:00 a.m., so a same-day return trip is effectively impossible — an overnight stay at a mountain hut or tent is the premise. The Kamikochi official website states: "Beyond Yokoo the trail becomes a full-scale mountain path; depending on your fitness level, spending one night at Yokoo Sanso and heading for Karasawa Cirque the following morning is worth considering." It also states: "Trekking shoes or hiking boots, a hiking rucksack, rain gear, and other mountain equipment are essential. Absolutely avoid lightweight footwear such as trainers — set out with adequate equipment."

All accommodation is on a fully reservation-only basis.

• Karasawa Hutte: Open 27 April–3 November (closed for foundation renovation works 11–31 May). Reservations via the web platform "Yamatan" or by calling 090-9002-2534 directly; booking opens at 8:00 a.m. on the same date one month in advance. 1 night with 2 meals ¥16,000 / 1 night with dinner only ¥14,000 / 1 night with breakfast only ¥13,000 / room only ¥11,000 (¥3,000 discount for primary school children and below). Tent site fee: adults ¥2,000, children ¥1,000; no reservation — first come, first served from around 14:00–17:00 on the day. Tent rental (4-person tent) ¥12,000 + tent site fee; bookable from 2 weeks in advance.
• Karasawa-goya: Open 27 April–3 November 2026. Reservations by phone only: 090-2204-1300 (8:00–19:00); also from 8:00 a.m. one month in advance. 1 night with 2 meals ¥16,000 / room only ¥9,800 / private room +¥16,000 / same-day reservation +¥1,000; Nagano Prefecture accommodation tax ¥200 extra. Arrival by 15:00 is recommended.

Children aged 3 and under cannot stay at either facility.

Two Road Closures Planned in Shiga Kogen in October 2026

There is no private vehicle ban in Shiga Kogen — you can drive in — but according to official road traffic information, the following restrictions are scheduled for October 2026.

• 16 October 13:00–18 October 18:00: The Shirakaba Route (Shiga Kogen Yama-no-Eki to Hotel Astoria) will be fully closed (for the "Kinshuu no Craft Fair in Shiga Kogen" event).
• 3 October 9:00–13:00: Prefectural Road 502 (Okushiga Kogen Sakae Line) will be fully closed (Nozawa Onsen cycling festival).

Both coincide with the peak foliage period. (Enquiries: Nagano Prefecture Hokushin Construction Office 0269-22-3139 / Gunma Prefecture Nakanojo Civil Engineering Office 0279-75-3047.) The Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route (National Route 292) reopened fully from 13:00 on 29 May 2026 giving direct access to Kusatsu Onsen, but in the past there have been time-based restrictions on the Gunma Prefecture side when the eruption alert level for Mt. Kusatsu-Shiranesan has risen, so please also check volcano information.

Foliage in Shiga Kogen Progresses in Order of Elevation

Shiga Kogen spreads across elevations of 1,300–2,300 m, and the official website shows the order of progression. The earliest is Yokoteyama and Shibu Pass (elevation 2,307 m), followed in sequence by Hasuike → Maruike → Biwaike (elevation 1,500 m), with Ichinuma (elevation 1,400 m) among the latest. The overall peak is typically around early October, lasting through late October. In early years, the first snow falls in mid-October and the area takes on a wintry appearance by November.

For those who are not confident in their physical fitness but still want to see autumn foliage at 2,307 m, the Yokoteyama Skylator and Lift (operating April–November) is the answer. The fare for a return trip to the summit is ¥2,200 for adults and ¥1,900 for primary school children; one way is ¥1,600 for adults and ¥1,400 for children; the Super Double round trip (6-ride pass) is ¥2,700 for adults. The 200-metre-long outdoor moving walkway with a 35-metre elevation gain takes approximately 5 minutes. On weekends and busy periods it operates upward only, with the descent made by lift or a free shuttle bus. It is suspended in thunder or heavy storms.

No Night Illuminations at Any of the Three Spots

None of Kamikochi, Karasawa Cirque, or Shiga Kogen has any information about autumn foliage illuminations on its official website. If you go expecting to see foliage lit up at night you will be disappointed, so plan your visit around daytime viewing. Yokoteyama/Shibutoge ski area in Shiga Kogen does operate a weekend-only night lift, but this is aimed at stargazing and night views — it is not a foliage illumination event — and whether it runs at all varies from year to year.

Temperatures and Clothing in Kamikochi (Official Data)

The temperatures published on the Kamikochi official website are: September — maximum 20.0 °C / minimum 12.1 °C; October — maximum 12.5 °C / minimum 3.6 °C; first half of November — maximum 8.9 °C / minimum −1.1 °C. The official site advises bringing "fleece jackets, mountain parkas, and other warm layers" and states that "the area is susceptible to typhoons and receives a lot of rain, so always carry rain gear."

Autumn Events

"Kinshuu no Craft Fair in Shiga Kogen" will be held from 13:00 on 16 October to 18:00 on 18 October 2026 between Shiga Kogen Yama-no-Eki and Hotel Astoria (this is the road closure mentioned above). The "Okushiga Kogen Koyo Festa" (autumn foliage festival) is also scheduled for October 2026, but the confirmed dates have not yet been announced.
