Nagasaki City History Walk with Glover Garden, Oura Church and Dejima

Nagasaki is a town of slopes and sea, wrapped in an air that feels a little foreign. On this route you spend a full day visiting the hillside Western mansions where foreigners once lived, the oldest church in Japan, and Dejima, the island that served as the gateway of trade in the Edo era. The walking distances are gentle, making this a perfect starter course for a first visit.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Glover Garden Arrive early while it is quiet and explore the cluster of Western houses on the hill. Ride the moving walkway to the top, then work your way down. Capture the garden overlooking the harbor and the romantic Meiji-era buildings.

10:30 On to Oura Church Just below the garden stands the oldest surviving church in Japan, marked by its white spire. Watch the light through the stained glass in the quiet nave and reflect on the history of Christianity in this land.

11:30 Stroll Minamiyamate and Higashiyamate Wander down the cobbled slopes past retro mansions and cafes. The famous Dutch Slope is nearby, and this is a fine time to stop for a local Nagasaki meal.

14:00 Head to Dejima Take the tram to the restored streets of Dejima. This fan-shaped artificial island was the only window to the West during the Edo period, and its rebuilt houses recreate daily life of the time.

16:00 Rest in Chinatown Finish with a relaxed walk through the nearby Chinatown. Reward tired feet with champon noodles or a steamed pork bun.

The view of the harbor from Glover Garden is one of the great highlights of a Nagasaki visit. The dignified form of Oura Church and the fan-shaped streets of Dejima tell the story of trade and faith that shaped this town. Toward evening the sun setting behind Mount Inasa is lovely, and the expressive scenery of this hillside city can be enjoyed all day.

Access and Tips

The tram is the main way to get around from Nagasaki Station. Buy a one-day pass for free hop-on hop-off travel. Glover Garden and Oura Church sit side by side, so cover them on foot together, then move to Dejima by tram. There are many slopes, so wear comfortable shoes.

A Quick Tip

Glover Garden is emptiest right after opening. An early start lets you avoid crowds and get clean photos. On clear days the harbor view is superb, so aim for fine weather.
