Hirado Castle Town and Church Tour Course

Hirado is a port town in northwestern Nagasaki that once flourished as a gateway of foreign trade. Its charm lies in a seaside castle, a church on a hill, and the unusual streetscape where temples and churches sit within the same view. On this course you walk at a relaxed pace to savor the scenery of Hirado, where Japanese and Western styles naturally blend. It is a day recommended for lovers of history and of scenery alike.

Course Route

9:30 Start at Hirado Castle Begin the day at Hirado Castle, set on a height jutting into the sea. From the keep you look out over the blue Hirado Strait and the town on the far shore, a view unique to a port town.

11:00 To the temple-and-church scene Climb the slope to meet the view that symbolizes Hirado, temple roofs in the foreground and a church spire rising beyond. Take your time with photos and reflect on the town's history.

12:00 Lunch in the castle town Eat lunch on a street of old merchant houses. Enjoy seafood from the harbor and sweets of foreign origin passed down in Hirado, flavors found only here.

14:00 Visit the hilltop church Head to the church on the hill overlooking the town. In the quiet nave, touch the history of faith rooted in this land. The surrounding heights offer sweeping views of town and sea.

15:30 Stroll the harbor Finish with a relaxed walk near the harbor, feeling the passing boats and the scent of the tide as you linger over the mood of the journey.

Highlights

The greatest highlight is the scene, found only in Hirado, of temple and church within a single view. Together with the vista from seaside Hirado Castle and the quiet of the hilltop church, you feel firsthand the history of a town where Japanese and Western, faith and trade, have crossed.

Access and Tips

Central Hirado gathers the castle, churches, and castle town within a fairly compact area, making it easy to tour on foot. There are many slopes, though, so wear comfortable shoes. Churches are also places of prayer, so visit quietly and mind your manners.

A Quick Tip

Hirado is a town whose sea scenery is especially lovely at dusk. If you have time, stay until around sunset and watch the sun sink from the harbor or castle. You will meet an unforgettable sight, a fitting close to the journey.
