Hirado Island flourished long ago through exchange with the wider world. On its west coast, beside the sweeping sands of Senrigahama, rises Senrigahama Onsen. With white beaches and blue sea in view, a bath while the sun sinks into the East China Sea is a special pleasure. A soothing soak rounds off a journey across this island full of exotic history.

Highlights

Senrigahama, spread out before you, is a beautiful shallow beach of long stretching sand. It draws summer swimmers and is fitted with showers, changing rooms, and parking. A short trip away you will find Hirado Castle, the Xavier Memorial Church, and streets that still recall the old southern trade, scattered sights that convey a distinctive past. The rich seafood of Hirado is a delight in its own right.

Enjoying the Seasons

Summer brings crowds who combine swimming with a soak, and a walk along the beach afterward feels wonderful. In autumn and winter the air clears, and the sun setting on the horizon grows all the more vivid. Throughout the year you can enjoy the water together with sea views.

Access and Basic Information

Crossing the Hirado Bridge by car is convenient, with access from the Matsuura area on the Kyushu mainland. Buses run from Tabira Hiradoguchi Station on the Matsuura Railway, a station known as the westernmost in Japan. Inns with sea views are plentiful, and some facilities offer day use bathing. The water is fondly called a beautifying spring.

Practical Travel Notes

Some inns at Senrigahama Onsen accept day use bathers, with fees ranging by facility from a few hundred to around a thousand yen. The evening view from a sea facing bath is the draw, so checking sunset times before you go lets you enjoy the scenery to the full. The area gets busy in the swimming season, so allowing extra parking time is reassuring. Hirado Islands sights are widely scattered, so getting around by car is handy. There are also attractions on the Matsuura side before you cross the bridge, and touring them together enriches the trip further.

A Quick Tip

If you are aiming for the sunset, check the time in advance to be safe. Wind can pick up by the shore, so bringing a light layer to slip on after your bath keeps you comfortable. Pair your visit with sights that trace the islands history, such as Hirado Castle and the Xavier Memorial Church.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Spring quality: Bicarbonate spring. Known as the "beauty bath," it has a smooth, silky feel on the skin
  • Indications: Cuts, peripheral circulatory disorders, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, and general indications (joint pain, muscle pain, lower back pain, neuralgia, weakened gastrointestinal function, mild high blood pressure, autonomic nervous system instability, sleep disorders and so on)
  • Contraindications: Illnesses accompanied by fever, active tuberculosis, serious heart or lung disease, severe anemia, kidney failure with edema, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute flare-ups of chronic conditions and so on
  • Day-trip bathing (Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Hotel Ranpu): Reception is from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 15:00 to 24:00 (last admission 22:00). No reservation needed. Entry may be refused depending on how busy it is
  • Bathing fee: Adults 700 yen on weekdays / 1,000 yen on weekends and public holidays / 1,200 yen on peak days; elementary school children and younger 500 yen on weekdays / 500 yen on weekends and public holidays / 600 yen on peak days; free for children under 3
  • Towels: In principle, bring your own. Rental costs an extra 330 yen
  • Tattoos: People with tattoos may not use the large public baths. However, use is permitted if the tattoo can be completely covered with the designated cover stickers (available for a fee)
  • Open-air bath: Yes. It can be used together with the large public bath with its view over the sea
  • Hirado Onsen arm bath and foot bath: Free of charge. The water temperature is 40-42 degrees. Right beside the Hirado Sanbashi bus stop
  • Location: Hotel Ranpu is at 55 Kawachi-cho, Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Senrigahama Beach is about a 10-minute walk away
  • Access (by car): Cross the Hirado Bridge to reach the island. About 85 minutes from the Sasebo area via the expressway
  • Access (by public transport): About 10 minutes by car from Tabira-Hiradoguchi Station on the Matsuura Railway. That station is known as the westernmost railway station in Japan. The hotel shuttle requires advance booking and runs to and from Tabira-Hiradoguchi Station and Hirado Sanbashi (Hirado Bus Terminal). There is also a scheduled service taking about 10 minutes from Hirado Koryu Hiroba (right beside Hirado Sanbashi) to the hotel, departing Hirado Koryu Hiroba at 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 and 18:00
  • How long to allow: 1-2 hours for the bath alone. Half a day to a full day if you also visit Hirado Castle and the Xavier Memorial Church
  • To avoid the crowds: Day-trip bathers concentrate in the time slot from 15:00. The morning slot from 7:00 to 10:00 is relatively calm. On weekends during the swimming season, the surrounding roads and car parks get congested
  • If you are after the sunset: The bath looks west out over the sea, so check the time of sunset before deciding when to bathe and you will not miss the view. It gets windy by the sea, so an extra layer to put on after your bath makes things more comfortable
  • Getting around the island: The sights of Hirado Island are spread out over a wide area, so getting around by car is the realistic option
