5 Photogenic Power Spots of Nara

1. Kasuga Taisha | A Profound Corridor Woven by Vermilion and Lanterns

Kasuga Taisha, also registered as a World Heritage site, is stunning with its 3,000 stone lanterns and hanging lanterns lined along the approach. The contrast of vermilion pillars and green moss is like another world.

🌅 Best Time: Early morning 6–8 a.m. The time when morning mist drifts and light streams in softly is the best. Late April, when the spring wisteria blooms, is also recommended.

2. Todai-ji Nandaimon | Giant Nio Guardian Statues and a Solemn Gate

The Nandaimon gate of Todai-ji, the symbol of Nara, has an overwhelming presence at a height of about 25 meters. The moment the Nio statues standing on the left and right and the deer fit into the same frame is truly a miraculous shot.

3. Murou-ji Temple | A Moss-Covered Five-Story Pagoda Standing Deep in the Mountains

Murou-ji, known as the "Koya for women," is famous for Japan's smallest five-story pagoda built deep in the mountains. The green of the surrounding moss and cedar grove gives off a somehow sacred atmosphere.

🌅 Best Time: Fresh greenery in May to June, or autumn foliage in November. Days when the air is clear after the rain are especially fantastical.

📸 Shooting Tips: With a low angle looking up from the bottom of the stone steps, express both the height of the pagoda and the grandeur of the trees at once.

🚃 Access: About 15 minutes by bus from Kintetsu Osaka Line "Murouguchi-Ono Station."

4. Mt. Yoshino | A Pink Superb View Dyeing the Whole Mountain with a Thousand Cherry Trees

Mt. Yoshino, where the entire mountain is dyed cherry-blossom color in spring, is also called Japan's number-one cherry-blossom-viewing spot. The combination of Kinpusen-ji's Zaodo Hall and cherry blossoms is truly a superb view among superb views.

5. Tanzan Shrine | A Miraculous Collaboration of Autumn Foliage and the Thirteen-Story Pagoda

Tanzan Shrine, also popular as a "power spot for love," boasts an exceptional beauty in autumn when its thirteen-story pagoda—the only wooden one in the world—is wrapped in autumn foliage.

🌅 Best Time: The autumn-foliage peak from mid to late November. The aim is the time when the afternoon slanting light warmly illuminates the pagoda and the foliage.

📸 Shooting Tips: A diagonal composition placing the pagoda and foliage at an angle from partway up the stone steps is recommended. Lavishly include the overlapping of red, orange, and yellow.

🚃 Access: About 25 minutes by bus from Kintetsu Sakurai Station, get off at "Tanzan Shrine."

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and viewing hours / closed days: Kasuga Taisha Shrine is open from 6:00 to 18:00. Murou-ji is open for visits from 8:30 to 17:00 (9:00 to 16:00 from December 1 to March 31). Tanzan Shrine is open from 8:30 to 16:30 (reception until 16:00). The Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji stands outdoors and can be seen at any time.
• Admission: Entry to Murou-ji is 600 yen for adults and 400 yen for children. Admission to Tanzan Shrine is 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children. The special worship at the main sanctuary of Kasuga Taisha and its National Treasure Museum require separate offerings and admission fees. The Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji and walks on Mount Yoshino are free of charge (admission to the Zaodo of Kinpusen-ji is charged separately).
• Access: Kasuga Taisha - about a 25-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, or right by the "Kasuga Taisha Honden" bus stop. Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji - about a 20-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. Murou-ji - about 14 minutes by Nara Kotsu bus from Murouguchi-Ono Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line, get off at "Murouji-mae" and walk about 5 minutes. Mount Yoshino - from Yoshino Station on the Kintetsu Yoshino Line, take the ropeway or the substitute bus service. Tanzan Shrine - about 25 minutes by Nara Kotsu bus from the south exit of Sakurai Station, get off at "Tanzan Jinja".
• Parking: Kasuga Taisha, Murou-ji and Tanzan Shrine all have paid parking. On Mount Yoshino, large-scale traffic restrictions and private-car restrictions are in force during the cherry blossom season, so using public transport is essential.
• Etiquette when worshipping: The stone lanterns and hanging lanterns of Kasuga Taisha are cultural properties. Touching them, leaning on them or placing objects on them is strictly forbidden. The deer of Nara Park are wild animals: when feeding them, give nothing other than the special deer crackers, do not chase them and do not force yourself on them. Tanzan Shrine and Murou-ji are quiet places of prayer.
• Photography rules: Both Murou-ji and Tanzan Shrine have set rules on whether photography is permitted for the Buddhist statues inside the halls and the interiors of the shrine buildings. Always follow the signs on site. Do not use a tripod in places where it would block the way, such as approach paths or stone steps. Commercial photography and pre-wedding shoots require permission at each shrine and temple.
• Safety notes: The stone steps leading from the five-story pagoda of Murou-ji to the inner sanctuary are steep and extremely slippery in the rain. Tanzan Shrine also has many stone steps, which become slippery with fallen leaves in the autumn foliage season. The deer of Nara Park become irritable during the rutting season (autumn) and the fawning season (early summer), and there have been accidents in which people were gored by antlers or bitten. Do not go near fawns.

Note: In normal seasons the Mount Yoshino ropeway runs only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, and on other days it is replaced by a substitute bus service (during the cherry blossom season it runs daily).
