1. Tosa Shrine (Kochi City) | A Moss-Covered Approach and a Majestic Main Hall

The chief tutelary shrine of Tosa, affectionately known as "Shinane-sama." Its green approach bathed in dappled sunlight feels as if time itself has stood still.

Instagram tip: A moss-covered stone path and the canopy of towering trees create a rich, layered gradient of deep green.

Best shooting time: Early morning. Before 10:00 a.m., when sunlight filters in softly, is recommended.

2. Chikurin-ji Temple (Godaisan, Kochi City) | A Famous Temple of the Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage

Temple No. 31 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, set on Mount Godaisan. The five-story pagoda was rebuilt in 1980 (Showa 55) using all-cypress construction; it is the main hall (Monju-do) that is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The contrast between the pagoda and the nationally designated scenic garden is breathtaking.

3. Mount Yokogura (Ochi Town) | The Giant Cedar Grove of Sugihara Shrine and Yokogura-gu

Mount Yokogura (776 m), where the "father of Japanese botany" Makino Tomitaro came to conduct his research. Perched on a cliff is Yokogura-gu Shrine; scattered about are Sugihara Shrine surrounded by giant cedars, and the tomb reference site of Emperor Antoku.

Access: About 7 km / 15 minutes by car from the center of Ochi Town to the No. 1 parking lot (about 2 km from No. 1 to No. 3 parking lot). Beyond the parking lot, the trail continues on mountain footpaths — wear proper footwear, bring rain gear and water. Do not approach the edges of the cliff.

4. Yamauchi Shrine (Kochi City) | A Shrine on the Banks of the Kagami River, Dedicated to the Lords of the Tosa Domain

A shrine dedicated to the first lord of the Tosa Domain, Yamauchi Kazutoyo, and his wife, along with all successive lords. It stands on the banks of the Kagami River, south of Kochi Castle.

Instagram tip: The shrine buildings set on the banks of the Kagami River and the tranquil, well-maintained grounds. The statue of the 15th domain lord, Yamauchi Yodo, is also a highlight.

Best shooting time: Morning during cherry blossom season (late March to early April). With few visitors around, you can enjoy the combination of cherry blossoms and the torii gate.

Access: About a 4-minute walk from the Tosaden Transportation tram stop "Kencho-mae" (about a 10-minute walk from Kochi Castle). Free parking available.

For Mt. Yokogura, a clear morning from the fresh greenery of spring into early summer is recommended.
• Opening and worship hours / closing days: The precincts of Tosa Jinja Shrine and Yamauchi Jinja Shrine are open for worship at any time. The treasure hall and the scenic garden at Chikurinji Temple have set viewing hours and cannot be entered outside them. Mt. Yokogura is an outdoor mountain area, so start your climb early enough to be back down before sunset.
• Fees: Worship at Tosa Jinja Shrine and Yamauchi Jinja Shrine is free of charge. The precincts of Chikurinji Temple are free to enter, while the treasure hall and scenic garden charge admission (please check the amount and viewing hours on the official website). The walking trails on Mt. Yokogura are free of charge.
• Access: Tosa Jinja Shrine is about a 15 to 20-minute walk from Tosa Ikku Station on the JR Dosan Line, or about a 5-minute walk from the Ikku Jinja-mae stop on the Tosaden Kotsu bus. Chikurinji Temple is about 30 minutes from Kochi Station on the MY Yu Bus. Yamauchi Jinja Shrine is about a 4-minute walk from the Kencho-mae streetcar stop on Tosaden Kotsu. Mt. • Photography rules: Follow the rules of each shrine and temple as to whether photography is allowed inside the halls or of the principal images. As a basic rule, do not photograph rituals in progress or other worshippers without permission, and follow the on-site notices regarding the use of tripods.
• Safety advice: Mt. Yokogura is 776 m high, and Yokogura-gu Shrine stands atop a sheer cliff. Bring comfortable shoes, rain gear and drinks, and do not go beyond the edge of the cliff or outside the fences. Chikurinji Temple and Tosa Jinja Shrine also have stone steps, so watch your footing.
