Isonokami Futsumitama Shrine

On a mountaintop in Akaiwa, Okayama, Isonokami Futsumitama Shrine is a venerable ancient shrine recorded even in the Engishiki of the Heian period and revered as the first shrine of Bizen Province. Its greatest distinction is that its sacred body is the sword used to slay the great serpent of myth. The Nihon Shoki records that the sword with which Susanoo no Mikoto slew the eight headed serpent Yamata no Orochi is in the keeping of the divine clan of Kibi, and that sword is said to be connected to this shrine.
