Korakuen Garden and Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter — A Journey to the Beauty of Okayama

Korakuen Garden and Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

Okayama Prefecture holds two of western Japan's most beloved destinations within easy reach of each other: Korakuen, consistently ranked among Japan's Three Great Gardens, and the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a perfectly preserved Edo-period canal town of white-walled storehouses and willow trees. Together they offer an exceptional journey through Japanese aesthetics — the refined art of the garden and the merchant culture of old Japan.

Highlights

Korakuen (meaning "Garden for Later Enjoyment") was completed in 1700 by the Ikeda clan, lords of Okayama, and spans 13.3 hectares of lawns, ponds, streams, tea houses, and plum and cherry groves. The broad open lawn at its center is unusual among Japanese gardens and gives it an airy, spacious quality. Okayama Castle, nicknamed "U-jo" (Crow Castle) for its black walls, looms dramatically across the Asahi River as borrowed scenery. In Kurashiki, the canal boat ride, the Ohara Museum of Art (Japan's first Western art museum), and the converted Ivy Square factory complex make for a full afternoon's exploration.

Getting There & Tips

- Korakuen: From JR Okayama Station, take a bus or tram approximately 15 minutes. Open 7:30–18:00 (until 17:00 November–March); admission ¥410. - Kurashiki Bikan Quarter: From JR Kurashiki Station, walk approximately 15 minutes. Canal boats operate 9:00–17:00. - Both destinations can be combined in a single day trip from Okayama Station. - A combined ticket for Korakuen and Okayama Castle is available.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (late March–April) is the peak season for both sites: cherry blossoms and irises bloom at Korakuen, and willows turn green along the Kurashiki canal. Autumn (October–November) brings spectacular foliage. Both sites are open year-round and offer distinct beauty in every season.
