1. Saijo Inari (Kita Ward, Okayama City) — Rows of Vermilion Torii Create a Dramatic Tunnel

Saijo Inari, counted among Japan's three great Inari shrines, offers a stunning shot created by the tunnel of vermilion torii lining the approach — reminiscent of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, where rows of torii form a fantastical corridor.

• Photogenic points: Shoot from a low angle toward the far end of the torii to create a spectacular view where the red gradient produces depth
• Best time: Around 8 a.m. when soft morning light streams through the torii. Autumn foliage season is also recommended
• Access: About 2 km from JR Kibi Line "Bitchu-Takamatsu Station," approximately 5 minutes by taxi; or by car, about 10 minutes from Okayama Soja IC

2. Kibitsu Shrine (Kita Ward, Okayama City) — A 360-Meter Corridor in a Nationally Designated National Treasure Shrine

Kibitsu Shrine, proud of its hiyoku-irimoya-zukuri main hall designated a National Treasure. What stands out is the 360-meter-long corridor. The gently curving wooden passage has a tranquil beauty, as though time has stopped.

3. Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (Takahashi City) — A Miraculous Spot Where the Castle Floats in a Sea of Clouds

Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, renowned as a mountain castle in the sky, is a miraculous spot where you can photograph its fantastical appearance floating above a sea of clouds from autumn through winter. One of Japan's twelve surviving original castle keeps, its bearing is stately and beautiful.

• Photogenic points: During sea-of-clouds season, a top-down shot from the "Gagyuzan" observation deck is a must. The castle and the white layer of clouds look like a dream world
• Best time: Early mornings in September–November (1–2 hours after sunrise). A clear day following a day with a large temperature difference is the prime target
• Access: About 20 minutes by taxi or sightseeing bus from JR Hakubi Line "Bichutakahashi Station"

4. Saidaiji Kannon-in (Higashi Ward, Okayama City) — The Three-Story Pagoda at Dusk Against a Gradient Sky

Saidaiji Kannon-in is nationally famous for the "Naked Festival (Hadaka Matsuri)," but it is actually also a spectacular photo spot for the contrast between the three-story pagoda and the sky at dusk. The scene where the red of the temple and the orange of the sunset merge is breathtakingly beautiful.

• Access: About 10 minutes by bus or taxi from JR Ako Line "Saidaiji Station"

5. Hofukuji Temple (Soja City) — A Hidden Photogenic Spot of Moss-Covered Stone Pavement and a Three-Story Pagoda

Hofukuji Temple, said to be where the artist Sesshu spent his childhood, is a little-known hidden gem with beautiful moss-covered stone pavement and a three-story pagoda. With few tourists, you can shoot to your heart's content in quiet surroundings — another attraction.

• Photogenic points: Shoot the approach leading along the stone pavement to the three-story pagoda with a wide-angle lens for a dramatic shot. Pairing with fresh greenery or autumn foliage also works well
• Best time: On overcast days, the soft light brings out the green of the moss and the distinctly Japanese beauty comes to the fore
• Access: About 10 minutes by car from JR Hakubi Line "Soja Station"

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and worship hours / closing days: At Kibitsu Shrine, applications for prayer rituals are accepted daily from 8:30 to 14:30. The narukama ritual is held from 9:00 to 14:00 (not on Fridays). Prayer rituals have changed to a complete online booking system.
• Admission: Worship within the precincts is free at both Kibitsu Shrine and Saijo Inari. Prayer rituals require a separate offering.
• Access: Kibitsu Shrine is at 931 Kibitsu, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture (tel. 086-287-4111). It takes about 30 minutes from JR Okayama Station to Kibitsu Station, then about a 10-minute walk from the station (about 40 minutes from JR Kurashiki Station). Saijo Inari is at 712 Takamatsu Inari, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture (tel. 086-287-3700), about 2 km or about 5 minutes by taxi from Bitchu-Takamatsu Station on the JR Momotaro Line (Kibi Line). From Okayama Momotaro Airport it is about 10 minutes by taxi.
• Parking: Kibitsu Shrine is 15 minutes by car from the Okayama-Soja IC and 15 minutes by car from the Okayama IC. Saijo Inari is about 10 minutes from the Okayama-Soja IC and about 12 minutes from the Kibi Smart IC.
• Etiquette when worshipping: The main hall and worship hall of Kibitsu Shrine are National Treasures, the Kita-Zuishinmon gate is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and the corridor is an Important Cultural Property designated by the prefecture. Please do not touch or lean against the cultural properties. On festival days such as the summer festival, requests to visitors are announced on the official website.
• Photography rules: Kibitsu Shrine posts a notice about photography in the news section of its official website. Be sure to read it before you visit. The corridor, about 360 m long, is also a passageway for worshippers, so avoid setting up a tripod for long photography sessions.
• Safety notes: Photographing the sea of clouds at Bitchu Matsuyama Castle involves travelling on mountain roads early in the morning. Visibility is poor and it is cold before dawn, so prepare warm clothing and suitable footwear.
