Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium: Encountering Whale Sharks in the Sea of Kuroshio

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, located on the Motobu Peninsula in the northern part of Okinawa main island, is one of Japan leading aquariums, boasting one of the world largest tanks, the Kuroshio Sea. The thrill of seeing majestic whale sharks and reef manta rays swim leisurely up close is something you can never experience anywhere else. Located within the vast Ocean Expo Park, it is an absolute highlight of Okinawa sightseeing that you can enjoy fully over a whole day.

The Spectacular Giant Tank

The Kuroshio Sea tank holds about 7,500 tons of water. The swimming of whale sharks over 8 meters long, seen through a large acrylic panel 8.2 m tall, 22.5 m wide, and 60 cm thick, is spectacular in a word. The sight of multiple whale sharks swimming together with reef manta rays dancing with their fins spread wide can be seen nowhere else in the world. You will want to sit on the sofa in front of the panel and gaze on, forgetting the passing of time. During the whale shark feeding commentary held several times a day, you can also see the feeding scene with the sharks swimming upright.

Dolphin Show and Free Areas

At Okichan Theater, adjacent to the aquarium, you can enjoy a thrilling performance show put on by dolphins. The outdoor stage with the blue sea and sky as a backdrop is refreshing, and viewing is free. You can also tour the Sea Turtle Pool and the Manatee Pool for free, adding to the strong value for money.

Enjoying Ocean Expo Park to the Fullest

Ocean Expo Park, home to the Churaumi Aquarium, gathers the Tropical Dream Center, the Oceanic Culture Museum, and Emerald Beach with its beautiful white sands, so you can enjoy half a day to a full day. The park is large, so using the electric shuttle car eases the walking between areas.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Location: 424 Ishikawa, Motobu Town, Kunigami District, Okinawa (inside Ocean Expo Park)
  • Opening hours: normally 8:30 to 18:30 (last admission 17:30). Hours are extended during some summer periods, so check the official site for the latest schedule
  • Admission: 2,180 yen for adults (revised October 2022). The former evening discount known as the 4 oclock ticket ended sales at the end of March 2023, so the fee is now the same regardless of the time of day
  • As an indoor facility unaffected by weather, it is ideal for rainy days during the rainy season or typhoon season
  • Whale shark feeding commentary is held several times a day; times vary by day, so check the in-house notices or staff on arrival
  • Weekend and long-holiday mornings tend to be crowded, while the quieter late afternoon lets you view the tank at a relaxed pace

Access and Basic Information

About 2 hours by rental car from Naha Airport, or roughly 2 hours 30 minutes by highway bus (such as Yanbaru Express Bus or airport limousine) from central Naha. Ocean Expo Park has several parking lots, all free to use. The aquarium can be reached from the south, central, or north park gates, with the south gate closest.

A Word of Advice

Ocean Expo Park is very large and has many attractions beyond the aquarium, so allow half a day to a full day for your visit. The surrounding Motobu Town and Nakijin Village are also home to the Bise Fukugi tree-lined lane and Nakijin Castle Ruins, so touring northern Yanbaru together makes for a rewarding day.
