5 Photogenic Scenic Spots in Osaka

When you think of Osaka, it's a city of food and entertainment—Osaka has many breathtakingly beautiful scenic spots that overturn that image. Why not leave the hustle and bustle of the city and set off with a camera? We present 5 special places that color your Instagram feed.

1. Mt. Yamato-Katsuragi (on the border between Osaka Prefecture and Nara Prefecture)

In spring the mountain slopes are blanketed in azaleas, and in autumn they burn with vibrant foliage — the sense of openness looking out over the Osaka plain from near the summit is simply breathtaking. The summit area is known as the Katsuragi Kogen plateau, and at azalea time the hillside is dyed deep crimson. A wide-angle shot taken near the ropeway summit station with the plain as a backdrop is highly recommended.

• 📅 Best season: Azalea peak is usually around mid-May (said to number "one million blooms at a glance")
• ⏰ Best time of day: Daytime. The Katsuragi Ropeway operates from 9:10 to 17:00, so it is not possible to plan a schedule that keeps you on the mountain after sunset
• 🚃 Access: From Kintetsu "Gose Station," take Nara Kotsu Bus routes 80 or 88 to "Katsuragi Ropeway Mae" (fare ¥340), then board the Katsuragi Ropeway. The ropeway may suspend service for regular maintenance or in bad weather

2. The Coastline of Misaki Town (Sennan District, Misaki Town)

Located at the southernmost tip of Osaka Prefecture, this area offers a crystalline landscape where the blue of the sea and sky melt together. Note that the leisure facility "Misaki Park" closed in March 2020 and is now partially open as the "Town-Managed Misaki Park" under Misaki Town's administration (redevelopment plans for the site remain fluid, so please check official Misaki Town information before visiting). There is a risk of being swept away by large waves along the coast, so avoid descending onto rocky outcrops or wave-dissipating blocks and shoot from safe locations such as the promenade.

• 📅 Best season: May–September (best contrast between blue sky and sea)
• ⏰ Best time of day: Morning (no backlighting, the blue of the sea is vivid)
• 🚃 Access: About 15 minutes on foot from Nankai Main Line "Misaki-koen Station"

3. Minoo Falls (Minoo City)

Selected as one of the "100 Famous Waterfalls of Japan," the 33-meter-high Minoo Otaki is breathtakingly beautiful in the contrast between its powerful cascade and the deep green foliage or autumn leaves. Framing the falls head-on with a gradient of autumn color surrounding it is the ultimate autumn shot. A vertical composition that captures the full height of the falls together with the surrounding trees gives a photo rich in depth.

• 📅 Best season: Autumn foliage peak is typically mid-November to early December
• ⏰ Best time of day: Morning (light streams into the falls and makes them sparkle)
• 🚃 Access: From Hankyu Minoo Line "Minoo Station," walk about 40 minutes along the Takimichi trail (approx. 2.7 km). You may encounter Japanese macaques along the trail — feeding them is prohibited

4. Night View from Mt. Ikoma Summit (on the border between Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture and Higashiosaka City, Osaka Prefecture)

Looking down over the Osaka plain's glittering nightscape from the summit of Mt. Ikoma is an unforgettable experience. Standing on the boundary between Nara and Osaka, you can take in a sweeping sea of shimmering light. Use a tripod and try long-exposure shots that capture light trails for a photo that rivals professional work.

• 📅 Best season: Autumn–winter (the air is clear and visibility extends far)
• ⏰ Best time of day: 30 minutes to 1 hour after sunset (blue hour)
• 🚃 Access: From Kintetsu "Ikoma Station," take the Ikoma Cable Car, about 16 minutes (Ikomasanjo Station). Ikoma Summit Amusement Park is free to enter, but is generally open 10:00–17:00, closed Thursdays, and closed for winter from December through early March (in 2025, closed December 1 through March 6, 2026, reopening March 7). If you plan to shoot the night view, be sure to confirm evening opening dates in advance

5. Osaka Nanko & Sunset Spot (Suminoe Ward)

You'll be amazed to find a sunset like this right in the middle of the city. The evening sky over the Nanko area, where orange and purple melt into the water's surface, and the silhouettes of passing ships make for an almost too-perfect scene. The classic shot is a silhouette with a person framed against the setting sun. However, climbing onto breakwaters, tetrapods, or off-limits embankments can lead to falls or drowning accidents — please absolutely refrain from doing so.

• 📅 Best season: October–February (the position and color of the sunset are at their best)
• ⏰ Best time of day: 15 minutes before to just after sunset
• 🚃 Access: About 10 minutes on foot from New Tram "Nakafuto Station"

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: The azaleas on Mount Yamato Katsuragi are usually at their best around mid-May (they are described as a million blooms at a glance). The autumn foliage at Minoo Otaki Falls runs from mid-November to early December. The night view from the summit of Mount Ikoma is best in autumn and winter, when the air is clear. For the sunset at Nanko, aim for the period from 15 minutes before sunset to just afterwards.
• Opening hours and operating periods: The Katsuragiyama Ropeway runs 9:10-17:00 (it may be suspended for regular inspections or in stormy weather). Ikomasanjo Amusement Park is free to enter but is open in principle 10:00-17:00 and closed on Thursdays, and it closes for the winter from December to early March (in 2025 it was closed from December 1 to March 6, 2026 and reopened on March 7). If your aim is the night view, be sure to check the evening opening days in advance.
• Prices: The Nara Kotsu bus from Kintetsu Gose Station to the Katsuragi Ropeway-mae stop costs 340 yen. For the fares of the Katsuragiyama Ropeway and the Ikoma Cable Car, check each operator's official website. Admission to Ikomasanjo Amusement Park is free of charge, with rides charged separately. Admission to Minoo Otaki Falls and Minoo Park is free of charge.
• Access: For Mount Yamato Katsuragi, take Nara Kotsu bus route 80 or 88 from Kintetsu Gose Station, get off at Katsuragi Ropeway-mae, and take the ropeway to the summit. For the coast of Misaki Town, walk from Misakikoen Station on the Nankai Main Line. For Minoo Otaki Falls, walk about 40 minutes along the Takimichi path (about 2.7 km) from Minoo Station on the Hankyu Minoo Line. For the summit of Mount Ikoma, take the Ikoma Cable Car from Kintetsu Ikoma Station, which takes about 16 minutes. For Nanko, walk from Nakafuto Station on the New Tram line.
• Parking: Public transport is convenient for all of these spots. Check each facility's official website for whether parking is available and what it costs.
• Photography rules: Minoo Park lies within the Meiji no Mori Minoo Quasi-National Park, where collecting plants and animals and feeding wildlife are prohibited. Even if you meet Japanese macaques on the Takimichi path, do not feed them. Follow the facility's rules for photography inside Ikomasanjo Amusement Park. Flying drones is regulated both in quasi-national parks and in urban areas, and permission is required as a rule.
• Safety advice: On the coast of Misaki Town there is a risk of being swept away by high waves, so avoid climbing down onto the reefs or wave-dissipating blocks and take your photos from safe places such as the promenade. At Nanko too, never climb onto breakwaters, tetrapods or quaysides that are off limits, as this leads directly to falls and drowning accidents. The Katsuragiyama Ropeway and the Ikoma Cable Car do not run at night, so if you stay on the summit after sunset you will have no way down. Avoid the walking trails, as they are dangerous at night. The Takimichi path in Minoo has very little lighting once it gets dark.

Please note that Misaki Park closed in March 2020 and part of the site is now open as the town-run Misaki Park, managed by Misaki Town. Plans for redevelopment of the site are in flux, so check Misaki Town's official information before you visit.
