Tenjin Matsuri: One of Japan's Three Great Festivals, the Grand Festival Coloring Osaka Summer

Osaka's Largest Summer Festival

The Tenjin Matsuri is the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu, which enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and it boasts a history of more than 1,000 years. Together with Kyoto's Gion Festival and Tokyo's Kanda Festival it is counted as one of Japan's "three great festivals," and it is held on a grand scale every year on July 24 (yoimiya, the eve) and July 25 (hongu, the main day). The scene woven from the spirited rites in which the mikoshi travel over both land and river and the dedicated fireworks that scorch the night sky is truly a signature sight of summer in Naniwa.

The Spectacle of the Funa-Togyo (River Procession)

The highlight of the main day's night is the "funa-togyo." About 100 boats set out onto the Okawa (the old Yodo River), and around the boat carrying the divine spirit, boats bearing musicians, geiko and maiko come and go. The fleet lit by braziers fills the river surface, and the sight amid the resounding drums and gongs is overwhelming. In the "riku-togyo" (land procession) that begins in the evening, a procession of about 3,000 people parades through the city in period costume.

Dedicated Fireworks Festival

The "Tenjin Matsuri dedicated fireworks," launched at the same time as the funa-togyo, is one of Osaka's foremost fireworks displays, with about 4,000 shells. The scene in which the lights of the fleet reflected on the river surface and the fireworks in the night sky become one is a superb view found only at this festival. The areas around Temmabashi and Sakuranomiya overflow with spectators, brilliantly coloring Osaka's summer night.

Tips for Enjoying the Festival

Because the main day becomes extremely crowded from the evening, it is reassuring to secure a spot early. Paid viewing seats are also provided. Various rites are held from the yoimiya on the previous day, so the yoimiya is recommended for those who want to watch at a relaxed pace. Together with food stall gourmet and a visit to Osaka Tenmangu, you can enjoy a full day.

Access and Viewing Locations

About a 5-minute walk from "Minamimorimachi Station" on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line and Sakaisuji Line, or "Osaka Tenmangu Station" on the JR Tozai Line. The funa-togyo can be viewed from the embankments along the Okawa River, with paid viewing areas also available.

Practical Information (2026)

• Dates: Friday, July 24, 2026 (yoimiya) / Saturday, July 25, 2026 (hongu)
• July 24 (yoimiya): 7:45 Yoimiya-sai (main hall) -> shortly after 8:30, a procession of about 200 people including the divine child bearing the sacred halberd and attendants departs from the front gate of Osaka Tenmangu -> around 8:50, the Hokonagashi rite (Dojima River). In addition, lion dances tour the parish district
• July 25 (hongu): Following the Hongu-sai and the transfer of the divine spirit come the riku-togyo, then the funa-togyo on the Okawa and the dedicated fireworks. The schedule for the special viewing seats is gates open 17:30 / funa-togyo starts 18:00 / dedicated fireworks start 19:30 / ends 21:00

• A Fureai no Mizube venue and B Sakuranomiya venue: about a 5-minute walk from the west exit of "Sakuranomiya" Station on the JR Osaka Loop Line
• C Enkei Hiroba venue and D Senpukan East venue: about a 10-minute walk from Exit 9 of "Minamimorimachi" Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line and Sakaisuji Line, or Exit 9 of "Osaka Tenmangu" Station on the JR Tozai Line
• E Zoheikyoku Taigan venue: about a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of "Osakajo-kitazume" Station on the JR Tozai Line
• F Temmabashi venue: about a 5-minute walk from Exit 14 of "Temmabashi" Station on the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line, Keihan Main Line and Keihan Nakanoshima Line
• Parking: There is no dedicated parking. Osaka Tenmangu has neither car nor bicycle parking, and the official guidance states, "The areas around each venue become very crowded and traffic restrictions apply at certain times, so please refrain from coming by car"
• Paid viewing seats (there are no free seats; organized and sold by JTB, on sale from May 25, 2026)
• A Fureai no Mizube venue: reserved table seat 38,000 yen (per table) / unreserved sand-beach seat 8,000 yen
• B Sakuranomiya venue: reserved table seat 53,000 yen (with boxed meal, +2,000 yen per meal) and others
• C Enkei Hiroba venue: reserved table seat, 4 persons per table 68,000 yen / 3 persons per table 54,000 yen
• D Senpukan East venue: reserved table seat 63,000 yen / standing area
• E Zoheikyoku Taigan venue: SS reserved seat 28,000 yen (30,000 yen with boxed meal) / S table reserved seat 54,000 yen / S reserved seat 18,000 yen

• Toilets: Temporary or permanent toilets are available at each venue
• Traffic restrictions: Implemented around Osaka Tenmangu on July 24 and 25. The restriction map is published as a PDF titled "Reiwa 8 (2026) Traffic Restriction Map" on the Osaka Tenmangu official website
• In case of rain: Held in rain (cancelled in severe weather), with no postponement. If cancelled partway through there is no refund; refunds apply only if both the funa-togyo and the dedicated fireworks are cancelled (for the A venue and the B venue SS block reserved table seats, refunds apply if the dedicated fireworks are cancelled). The cancellation decision is announced on the official Osaka Tenmangu Facebook page. Umbrellas cannot be used when the event is held in rain, so please prepare a raincoat
