When it comes to Saga Prefecture, Arita ware and the Yoshinogari Ruins are famous, but it is actually a treasure trove of Instagrammable gourmet food and sweets! We introduce five "photogenic sanctuaries" known only to those in the know. With your camera in hand, let's set out on a trip touring Saga's food

01 | Maruboro Arranged Sweets / Long-Established Confectionery Shops in Saga City

"Maruboro," a famous sweet representing Saga. With its round, plump form and gentle beige color, it is a dish that becomes picturesque just by being lined up. At long-established shops, colorful arranged versions also appear, and combinations with white backgrounds or Arita ware vessels are hugely popular on social media.

📸 Photogenic Points: Shooting from directly overhead (top-down) lines up the round forms for a rhythmic composition. The morning, when natural light enters, is best.

03 | Takeo's Fruit Daifuku / Japanese Sweets Shops in Takeo City

Fruit daifuku that wraps whole seasonal fruit—the moment you reveal the cross-section is the greatest photogenic point! The sight of vivid strawberries and muscat grapes standing out against the white mochi sends your excitement soaring just by looking.

📸 Photogenic Points: A side angle with the cross-section facing the camera is standard. Using a wood-grain plate or washi paper as a background brings out a more refined atmosphere. The seasonal strawberry season (December to March) is especially recommended.

04 | Latte Art at an Arita Ware Cafe / Arita Town

The collaboration of a cup with delicate painting and carefully drawn latte art is truly "drinkable art." Shooting it against the backdrop of Arita's townscape leaves vivid memories of your trip.

05 | Yobuko's Live Squid Sashimi / Yobuko Town, Karatsu City

Yobuko's live squid sashimi, with overwhelming transparency. The sight of the transparent squid flesh sparkling is truly a jewel of the sea! Combined with a blue vessel or a location with a sea view, a shot full of extraordinary feeling is completed.

📸 Photogenic Points: To make use of the squid's transparency, aim for a window-side seat in a bright interior. An angle from 45 degrees diagonally draws out both three-dimensionality and transparency at the same time.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening hours and closing days: The long-established confectioners selling maruboro, the Japanese sweet shops and cafes of Takeo and Arita, and the squid restaurants of Yobuko all have different opening hours and closing days from one another. Some squid restaurants in Yobuko open only at lunchtime and close once they sell out, so booking or checking in advance gives peace of mind.
• Budget and price guide: Maruboro is priced as a souvenir gift. Live-sliced squid in Yobuko is sold at market price at many restaurants, so check the price when you arrive.
• Access: For Ureshino Onsen, the nearest station is Ureshino-Onsen Station on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, which opened in September 2022 (you can also take a bus from JR Takeo-Onsen Station). For Arita use JR Arita Station, for Takeo use JR Takeo-Onsen Station, and for Yobuko the usual approach is a bus from JR Karatsu Station.
• Parking: The streets of the Yobuko morning market and the old townscape of Arita are narrow, and on-street parking is not possible. Please use the designated visitor parking lots.
• Photography rules: At street markets such as the Yobuko morning market, do not photograph the goods or the sellers without permission. Always ask before taking photos, and avoid using a tripod in a way that blocks the walkway. Permission is also needed for photography inside inns and restaurants or where other customers appear in the shot. Some kilns prohibit photography of their works.
• Points to note: Live-sliced squid depends entirely on freshness, and in rough weather there may be no catch and none served. In Arita, traffic restrictions and severe crowding occur during the Arita Ceramic Fair (usually held over Golden Week).
