Udono Stone Buddhas

The Udono Stone Buddhas in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, are a magnificent historic site where numerous Buddhist images are carved into the face of a cliff. According to tradition, in the early Heian period the great priest Kukai stopped here and carved the images into the rock, and the site is said to have been a place of esoteric Buddhist practice. More than sixty stone images can still be confirmed today, and the precinct, surrounded by giant rocks and densely growing trees, is a power spot wrapped in a quiet and mystical atmosphere.
