Takigawa Shrine

Tucked away in the hills of Mishima City in Shizuoka Prefecture, Takigawa Shrine sits quietly where the underground waters of Mt. Fuji rise to the surface. It enshrines Seoritsuhime, a purification goddess said to wash impurities down from the rivers to the sea. Tradition holds that the shrine was founded around the same time as Mishima Taisha, and it was once known as Takigawa Fudo, a training ground where water was used for spiritual cleansing. Because it remains free of heavy tourism, it is a hidden purification spot where you can pray in stillness.

Highlights

- The Yamada River flowing through the grounds, with small falls splitting into several streams. The sound of the water settles the mind. - The enshrined purification goddess Seoritsuhime, known for washing away the impurities of body and spirit. - A heartfelt history of rebuilding the main hall after a 2013 fire, with help from local residents, Mishima Taisha, and Ise Shrine. - A tree lined approach filled with cool, fresh air that lets you forget the bustle of the city.

Enjoying the Seasons

The fresh greenery season is the most invigorating, when the spray of the falls meets the vivid young leaves. In summer the shade and the sound of water bring coolness, making it perfect for a visit to escape the heat. In autumn the surrounding trees take on faint color, and in winter the crisp air deepens the sacred quiet. Because the water flows year round, the grounds feel lush whenever you arrive.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Kawaragaya, Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture - Access: About ten odd minutes by bus from JR Mishima Station, then roughly an eight to nine minute walk from the nearest stop.
