Kakitagawa Springs, a Sacred Blue Hole Where the Underground Waters of Mt. Fuji Rise

🗻 Shizuoka|June 23, 2026

Kakitagawa Springs

The Kakitagawa spring water group spreading through Kakitagawa Park in Shimizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a miraculous clear stream where snow and rain that fell on Mt. Fuji flow underground over long years and gush forth abundantly. Designated a national natural monument and chosen as one of the hundred best waters of Japan, it is one of the foremost spring water sites in the country. Watching the blessings of Mt. Fuji well up right before your eyes is truly a sacred place to feel the power of nature. Though it is a tourist site, one step into the park wraps you in clear air and the sound of water.

Highlights

- The Blue Hole viewed from the second observation deck. Spring water has gathered in the remains of an old factory well, creating a mystical blue scene. - The spring points visible from the first observation deck, where you can closely observe water welling up from underground. - Spring water that stays at a constant temperature year round, feeling cool in summer and faintly warm in winter. - A spring water plaza where you can actually dip your feet in and feel the coldness of the underground waters of Mt. Fuji.

Enjoying the Seasons

In the fresh greenery season the contrast between the blue spring water and the young leaves looks vivid and refreshing. Summer draws families seeking coolness and is a popular time to dip your feet in. In autumn the surrounding trees take on color, and the fall foliage reflects on the clear water surface. In winter the air is clear, and the blue of the spring water looks all the more vivid.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Shimizu Town, Sunto District, Shizuoka Prefecture - Access: About ten odd minutes by bus from JR Mishima Station.
