Karasawayama Jinja (Sano)

Atop Mount Karasawa in Sano City, Karasawayama Jinja is a shrine dedicated to Fujiwara no Hidesato, a warrior of the Heian period. It was built on the keep ruins of Karasawa Castle, a designated national historic site, and after Hidesato, who won fame in battle including the subjugation of Taira no Masakado, it is known as the God of Victory, drawing faith for blessings of winning fortune and rising luck. In recent years it has also become popular for the friendly cats that live on its grounds.

Highlights

- The stone walls and keep ruins of Karasawa Castle, remaining on a summit about 240 meters high, with scenery that recalls a natural fortress - A hall enshrining Fujiwara no Hidesato, revered as the God of Victory - Cats beloved by the community lounging here and there along the approach, a spot not to be missed by cat lovers

Enjoying the Seasons

The whole mountain, cloaked in red pine, shows the colors of each season, with fresh green in spring and fall foliage coloring the grounds. From the summit one can take in the entire Kanto Plain, and on clear days even the distant skyscrapers of the capital may come into view. The cats charm visitors no matter the season.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Fuji, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture - Reached by car from central Sano, with the road climbing close to the summit - Stone steps and slopes around the castle ruins make comfortable walking shoes a good idea
