Omuro Takaokami Jinja (Nikko)

Takaokami Jinja in the Omuro area of Nikko City is an old shrine said to predate the Heian period. It enshrines the mountain god Oyamatsumi no Kami among other deities and is known for blessings of protection from misfortune, protection from unlucky directions, and healing from illness. Said to be even older than the famous Nikko Tosho-gu, its richly natural precinct is filled with clear, fresh air.

Highlights

- The sacred spring water of Takaokami, which stays at about 14 degrees year round and is enjoyed for its smooth taste - Worshippers can be seen enjoying tea or coffee brewed with the sacred water - A quiet precinct revered for warding off misfortune and unlucky directions

Enjoying the Seasons

In the season of fresh greenery the grounds are wrapped in vivid leaves, and in autumn the precinct is colored by fall foliage. The cold sacred water is especially welcome in summer, cleansing body and mind on a hot day. In winter the shrine shows a quiet presence amid snowy scenery, offering a different face in every season.
