Nikko World Heritage One Day Course

Nikko is one of Tochigi prefecture most famous destinations. Registered as a World Heritage site in 1999, the Shrines and Temples of Nikko include Futarasan Shrine, Toshogu Shrine, and Rinno-ji Temple. This classic course starts at the vermilion Shinkyo Bridge and lets you walk to the ornately carved Toshogu in a single day, making it perfect for a first visit.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Nikko Station From JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station, take a bus to the red Shinkyo Bridge over the Daiya River. Admire the beautiful bridge that marks the gateway to the temple district.

9:30 Visit the Sanbutsudo at Rinno-ji Head to Rinno-ji, an ancient temple founded by the monk Shodo. Its Sanbutsudo, the largest wooden building in Nikko, enshrines three Buddhist statues.

10:30 Explore Nikko Toshogu Move on to Toshogu, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Take your time with the Yomeimon Gate, the Three Wise Monkeys, and the Sleeping Cat. Mornings are best before the crowds arrive.

12:30 Lunch near the gate Rest with local specialties such as Nikko yuba (tofu skin) or soba noodles served at shops dotting the approach.

13:30 Futarasan Shrine and Taiyuin Visit Futarasan Shrine, known for matchmaking, and the solemn Taiyuin, dedicated to the third shogun Iemitsu.

15:30 Return to Nikko Station Take the World Heritage loop bus back to the station, and if time allows, relax at a cafe near the station.

Highlights

The greatest highlight is the Yomeimon Gate at Toshogu, designated a National Treasure. With more than 500 carvings, it is so captivating that it is nicknamed the gate where you lose track of the day. Do not miss the Three Wise Monkeys at the sacred stable and the Sleeping Cat on the corridor to the inner shrine. The Sanbutsudo at Rinno-ji and the dignified Taiyuin are also worth savoring.

Access and Tips

From the Tokyo area, the Tobu Railway limited express is convenient, running directly from Asakusa to Tobu Nikko Station. Within the precinct, the World Heritage loop bus circles the area and pairs well with walking. There are many slopes and stone steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Admission closes 30 minutes before the gates shut, so starting in the morning is reassuring.

A Quick Tip

Each shrine and temple charges separate admission, so a combined ticket is a good value if you plan to visit several. Autumn foliage season is very crowded, so aim to arrive early.
