Course Route

9:00 Start at Naruto Park From the lookout, take in the emerald sea and the great Onaruto Bridge to set the mood. You can survey a broad panorama of the bridge, the whirlpools, and the Kii Channel.

9:30 Walk the Uzunomichi On this walkway 45 meters above the sea, glass floor panels let you look straight down at the swirling tides. The sea spreading below and the churning current are full of power, offering thrill and view at once.

10:30 Board a sightseeing boat Time your ride to the tides and you can approach the whirlpools up close. The Onaruto Bridge seen from the boat and the swirling sea near at hand are truly striking.

12:00 Lunch with Naruto seafood Fill up on dishes made with Naruto sea bream and seaweed. Firmed by the fierce currents, Naruto sea bream is a local delicacy.

13:30 On to the Otsuka Museum of Art Follow the route through halls where world masterpieces are recreated full size on ceramic boards. The Sistine Chapel and Monet great water lilies appear one after another, lifelike in their scale.

17:00 Head home The vast galleries make for a full day. End it while the impressions of the masterpieces still linger.

The Naruto whirlpools are among the largest in the world, with the days around spring tide offering the best show. At their peak the whirlpools can reach 20 meters across, a stunning sight. The Otsuka Museum recreates Western masterpieces old and new full size on ceramic boards, and the recreated Sistine Chapel space is stunning. You may touch the works and take photos freely.

Access and Tips

Check a tide table for peak whirlpool times before planning your day. The whirlpools grow only at limited hours of the day, so the trick is to match your boat and walkway times to them. Allow around three hours for the museum to be safe.

A Quick Tip

The Uzunomichi can be windy, so a jacket adds comfort. The museum viewing route runs about four kilometers, so wear comfortable shoes. The halls are vast, so deciding which works you want to see in advance helps you tour efficiently.

Practical Travel Notes

• Uzunomichi walkway: admission is 510 yen for adults, 410 yen for junior high and high school students, and 260 yen for elementary students (preschoolers free). Hours vary by season, running 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30) from March to September, 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30) from October to February, and extended to 8:00 to 19:00 during Golden Week and summer break. Closed on the second Monday of March, June, September, and December.
• Otsuka Museum of Art: same day tickets are 3,300 yen for adults, 2,200 yen for university students, and 550 yen for elementary, junior high, and high school students, so admission runs high. Open 9:30 to 17:00 (ticket sales until 16:00), closed Mondays (the next day if Monday is a holiday). The viewing route is about four kilometers, so allow plenty of time.
• Peak whirlpool times depend on the tides and grow largest around spring tide. Check the tide table for your visit date and choose your boat departure accordingly.
• The Naruto Park area is convenient by car, but you can also reach it by bus from JR Naruto Station or the Naruto expressway bus stop.
• Fees and hours can change, so please check each facility official information before you go.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Uzushio whirlpool cruises (Naruto Kanko Kisen, Kameura Kanko Port): The large boat "Wonder Naruto" costs 2,000 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for children (elementary school age), takes about 30 minutes, and runs 12 times a day at 40-minute intervals between 9:00 and 16:20 with no reservation required. The small boat "Aqua Eddy", which has an underwater observation room, costs 2,500 yen for adults and 1,200 yen for children, takes about 25 minutes, runs 15 times a day, and requires advance reservation as it carries only 46 passengers
• Uzushio Kisen (Kameura Fishing Port, behind the Otsuka Museum of Art): A small high-speed boat costing 2,000 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for children (elementary school age), with one preschool child free per adult. It operates 8:00-17:00 (last departure 16:30) all year round. Payment is by cash only, and there is parking for 50 ordinary cars and 2 large buses around the boarding point
• Parking (Naruto Park): Cars 500 yen (about 200 spaces), motorcycles 200 yen, buses 2,000 yen (20 spaces). Open 9:00-17:30 (8:30-18:00 from July 20 to August 31), and it is about a 5-minute walk from the No. 1 car park to Uzu no Michi
• A note on car navigation: Setting "Uzu no Michi" as your destination can lead you to a different spot, so it is safer to set "Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall Eddy"
