Naruto Kintoki: A Brand Sweet Potato Loved for Its Sweetness and Texture

Naruto Kintoki, cultivated in the sandy soil around Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, is a brand sweet potato characterized by refined sweetness and a fine, fluffy, starchy texture. With a vivid crimson skin and golden flesh, it is a proud agricultural product of Tokushima handled by supermarkets and department stores nationwide. Its brand value rises year by year.

Special Flavor Born from Sandy Soil Farming

The sandy fields along the Naruto Strait in Satoura, Otsu, and on Oge Island are known for the drainage and aeration unique to sea sand. Grown while sand is replenished once every few years and the potatoes absorb minerals from seawater, they become sweet sweet potatoes as fluffy as chestnuts. The mild, low-rainfall Seto Inland Sea climate and the temperature difference between day and night are also conditions that grow sweet potatoes rich in stored starch. The top-grade brand of the Satoura area, Satomusume, is known for its fine appearance and high-quality sweetness.

Season and How to Eat

Harvest is mainly in summer (early July to around late September), with shipping from mid-July to around late February of the following year. It is said the peak comes twice, right after harvest (July to August) and after storage has increased the sweetness (December to January). Its uses are wide-ranging, including baked sweet potato, tempura, candied sweet potato, sweet potato confection, and imo-kenpi, and stone-baked sweet potato in particular brings out the sweetness sharply.

Naruto Kintoki Sweets and Souvenirs

Imo-kenpi, pudding, tarts, sweet potato confection, and dorayaki made with Naruto Kintoki are standard Tokushima souvenirs. They can be found at shops in JR Tokushima Station and Tokushima Awaodori Airport, and purchased at the JA direct-sale shops in Satoura and through online mail order.

Access and Basic Information

  • Where to buy: Seasonal Naruto Kintoki and processed goods can be purchased at the Michi-no-Eki Daiku-no-Sato roadside station in Naruto City and at JA direct-sale shops in Satoura, among others.
  • By rail and car: Accessible from the JR Naruto Station and Naruto Park area. The Naruto-kita IC on the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway is nearby, about 40 minutes by car from central Tokushima.
  • A standard course is to stop by in combination with the Naruto whirlpools or the Otsuka Museum of Art.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Recommended season and time: To taste Naruto Kintoki at its peak, summer right after harvest or autumn to winter (November to January), when storage increases sweetness, is recommended. Baked sweet potato is especially delicious in the cold season.
  • Estimated time needed: One to two hours for just buying souvenirs and touring direct-sale shops. A standard plan is to enjoy the Naruto area over a full day combined with the whirlpools or the Otsuka Museum of Art.
  • Avoiding crowds: Direct-sale shops are busy during the peak harvest and shipping period and on long holidays. Weekday mornings are relatively calm.
  • Nearby real spots: The Naruto whirlpools (sightseeing boats and the Uzunomichi walkway), the Otsuka Museum of Art, Naruto Park, the Onaruto Bridge, and the Michi-no-Eki Daiku-no-Sato.
  • Budget sense: Raw sweet potatoes are from several hundred yen per bag, and processed-sweets souvenirs center around 1,000 yen. Combined with whirlpool sightseeing or the museum, budget around 5,000 yen for a day.

A Word of Advice

A feature of Naruto Kintoki is that storage, or curing, removes excess moisture and raises the sugar content further. If you want to savor the sweetness fully, enjoying stone-baked sweet potato in winter after storage is recommended. If bringing raw potatoes home as a souvenir, store them in a well-ventilated, cool, dark place; a refrigerator is unsuitable because it causes chilling injury. Touring together with the Naruto whirlpools and the Otsuka Museum of Art lets you fully enjoy the whole Naruto area.
