Toyama City and Fugan Canal Kansui Park Model Course

Starting at the waterside park spread north of Toyama Station, this course tours the city by tram. You spend a day where urban convenience blends with nature. Kansui Park is about ten minutes on foot from the north exit of Toyama Station, an ideal base for a city walk.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Fugan Canal Kansui Park Enjoy the canalside lawns and Tenmon Bridge with the waterside scenery. Tenmon Bridge is a wooden bridge about 58 meters long with observation towers roughly 20 meters high at each end. The park is also home to what is said to be the first Starbucks in a Japanese city park.

10:00 Cruise on the Fugan water line Board the sightseeing boat along the canal and experience the raising and lowering of water levels at the Nakajima Lock, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The course down from Kansui Park to Iwase takes about 60 minutes.

11:30 Stroll the Iwase townscape Visit the old shipping merchant houses in this former Kitamaebune port town.

13:00 Take the tram to the center Ride the retro streetcar back toward Toyama Station.

14:30 Visit Toyama Castle Park Look upon the moat-ringed castle and keep and touch the history of the castle town. The interior of the keep is open as a local history museum.

16:00 Head to the Glass Art Museum Admire the glass works that Toyama takes pride in inside striking modern architecture.

Practical Travel Notes

• Time needed: With the park, the canal cruise, and the city walk, allow a full day. Building the plan around the cruise time makes the loop smoother.
• Access: Kansui Park is about ten minutes on foot from the north exit of Toyama Station. Trams are well developed in the city, linking the station area with the castle park and the Glass Art Museum direction.
• Handy passes: A one-day pass lets you hop on and off the trams around the city with ease.
• Canal cruise: The Fugan water line generally runs from April to November (suspended in winter). The one-way course from Kansui Park to Iwase is about 60 minutes for 2,500 yen adult, and the round-trip Nakajima Lock course is about 70 minutes for 2,000 yen adult as a guide. Please confirm the latest fares and sailing days officially. It uses reservations, so booking ahead is recommended.
• Crowds and dusk: Weekends and holidays bring crowds to the park and cruise. The park cafe is popular at dusk, so if you have time, staying until sunset is a fine choice.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening hours of Toyama Castle (Toyama Municipal Folk Museum): 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30)
• Admission and closing days of Toyama Castle (Toyama Municipal Folk Museum): 210 yen for adults, free of charge for high school students and younger. Closed over the New Year period (December 28 to January 4) and on temporary closing days such as when exhibitions are being changed. There is no dedicated parking lot, so use the underground parking lot at Joshi Park (paid)
• Opening hours and closing days of the Toyama Glass Art Museum: 9:30 to 18:00. Closed on the first and third Wednesdays and over the New Year period
• Admission to the Toyama Glass Art Museum: The permanent exhibition costs 200 yen for adults and university students (170 yen for groups of 20 or more) and is free of charge for high school students and younger. There is no dedicated parking lot, so use the parking lots in the surrounding area
• Admission and parking at Kansui Park: Admission is free. From March 13, 2026 the surface parking lot in the park becomes paid: the first 60 minutes are free, and thereafter 110 yen per 30 minutes, with a same-day maximum of 500 yen on weekdays and 1,000 yen on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
