Toyama City Sightseeing Guide: The Charm of a Compact City Toured by Tram

Toyama City promoted compact city policies early on, drawing domestic and international attention for livable urban planning centered on public transport. Using the LRT (next-generation tram) running through the city, you can tour the main sights efficiently and comfortably. Together with the breathtaking scenery of the Tateyama mountain range and fresh seafood, it is a prefectural capital where you can enjoy a journey unique to Toyama.

Highlights

Toyama City has put effort into developing a public transport network centered on the tram, aiming for a city where people can live without relying on cars. The LRT running through the city has low floors that make boarding easy, and its refined design is popular. A loop line also runs centered on Toyama Station, making it a strong ally of movement for tourists too. As a next-generation urban model, it draws inspection visits even from around the world.

A representative scenic spot of Toyama City is Fugan Canal Kansui Park. A beautiful waterside park making use of the canal, it is popular for a scenic Starbucks and the view from the Tenmon Bridge. On clear days, you can see the majestic Tateyama mountain range beyond the water. In the city center is also Toyama Castle Ruins Park, where the castle tower has been reconstructed, beloved as a cherry blossom spot.

Seasonal Enjoyment

Spring and autumn, when the clear air lets you see the Tateyama mountain range distinctly, are ideal for both walking the city and enjoying the views. Spring, when white shrimp and firefly squid come into season, is not to be missed for a tour of Toyama Bay flavors. There are different charms each season: spring when the cherry blossoms of Toyama Castle Ruins Park bloom, early summer when the greenery of Kansui Park stands out, autumn when the Tateyama range is set against a clear sky, and winter with a view of the snow-capped mountains. At night, the illumination of Kansui Park is fantastical too.

Access and Basic Information

The gateway is Toyama Station on the JR and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines. It is about two hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and about 20 minutes from Kanazawa. From in front of the station, you can set off for city sightseeing right away by tram (the Toyama Chihotetsudo city tram), and using the loop line lets you tour the main spots efficiently. Fugan Canal Kansui Park is about a 10-minute walk from Toyama Station. It is reassuring to check the latest information on fares and lines. From Toyama Station you can also extend toward the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (to Tateyama Station via the Toyama Chihotetsudo railway) and toward the World Heritage Gokayama.

Practical Travel Notes

The city can be toured compactly by tram and on foot, so half a day to a full day lets you cover the main spots. Kansui Park is especially beautiful during the dusk-to-night illumination hours and is very photogenic. To avoid crowds, weekdays or mornings are recommended. Using Toyama as a base, a touring plan combining day-trip sights such as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, Gokayama, and Himi and Shinminato along Toyama Bay is recommended. Budget-wise, it is affordable even including city sightseeing by tram and meals, and you can enjoy gourmet food such as sushi from a few thousand yen.

A Word of Advice

Toyama is a prefectural capital where mountains, sea, and city are compactly gathered, perfect as a travel base. Make good use of the tram and the getting-around becomes part of the fun of the trip. On clear days, head to Kansui Park in search of a view of the Tateyama range. Together with the fresh seafood of Toyama Bay, savor to the full the charms unique to Toyama.
