Kamikura Jinja

Kamikura Jinja in Shingu City, Wakayama, is a subsidiary shrine of Kumano Hayatama Taisha and is said to be the sacred site where the deities of Kumano first descended, before they were enshrined as the three Kumano grand shrines. It stands on the slope of Mount Gongen, and at the top of 538 steep steps of natural stone, said to have been donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo, rises the great sacred boulder known as Gotobiki Rock. Often overlooked during visits to the three Kumano shrines, it is a powerful, lesser-known spot where one can sense the very origins of Kumano faith.

Highlights

- The great sacred boulder, clinging dramatically to the mountainside - The striking 538 stone steps, built up from mossy natural rocks - Views over the town of Shingu and the Kumano Sea from the top of the steps - The stage of the fire festival held each year on February 6, a nationally designated important folk cultural property

Enjoying the Seasons

In the season of fresh greenery, the trees over the steps are lush; in autumn the surroundings take on color. On clear winter mornings the boulder looks all the more divine, and at the February festival, men in white robes race down the steps with flaming torches in a stirring spectacle.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Kamikura, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture - Access: On foot or by bus from Shingu Station; car access is also possible - The steps are very steep, so wear comfortable, sturdy shoes - Take great care underfoot in rain or after dusk

A Quick Tip

The steps are quite steep and handrails are limited. Keep both hands free and climb slowly at your own pace. The sheer presence of the boulder you look up at from the top is something special.
