Nanki Katsuura Onsen
Facing a deeply cut inlet on the eastern coast of the Kii Peninsula, Nanki Katsuura Onsen is a port-town hot spring where scattered islets and a calm sea create beautiful scenery. Known nationwide as a tuna landing port, its great charm lies in offering both fine waters and fine flavors. The terrain surrounded by sea gives bathing here an open, liberating feeling.
Highlights
Crossing to an island in the bay and bathing inside a cave where waves roll in is a pleasure found only here. Soaking while listening to the sound of waves echoing off the rock has a mysterious atmosphere. Many inns are reached by boat, and the passage across the water feels like a small journey in itself.
Enjoying the Seasons
In winter tuna comes into season, and the fresh catch enjoyed after a bath is exceptional. In summer many people take to the calm waters of the bay for boating, while a cool sea breeze drifts pleasantly through. Spring and autumn bring mild weather, ideal seasons for relaxing while gazing out at the islands.
Access and Basic Information
The railway station sits close to the port, and from there it is common to cross to inns in the bay by shuttle boat. The area also serves as a base for journeys around the three grand shrines of Kumano, and many visit as part of a pilgrimage. Facilities offering day-use bathing are available as well.
A Quick Tip
Shuttle boats often run on fixed schedules set by each inn, so confirming your arrival time in advance brings peace of mind. To savor the seafood, aim to visit during the peak season for a more satisfying stay.
