Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening and worship hours / closed days: Entry to Yamadera Risshakuji is permitted 8:00-16:00 from April to September and 8:30-15:00 from December to March (gates close at 16:00); in winter these times may be brought forward depending on the weather. Honzan Jionji is open 9:00-16:00. Uesugi Shrine can be visited 6:00-17:00 (7:00-17:00 from November to March).
• Admission: Entry to Yamadera Risshakuji costs 500 yen for adults (junior high school age and above) and 200 yen for children (age 4 and above), cash only. Admission to Honzan Jionji is 700 yen (600 yen for groups of 15 or more). Visiting the shrine grounds is free of charge.
• Access: Yamadera - get off at Yamadera Station on the JR Senzan Line. Kumano Taisha - about a 10-minute walk from Miyauchi Station on the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line (3476-1 Miyauchi, Nan'yo City). Uesugi Shrine - about 10 minutes from JR Yonezawa Station on the city-center loop bus, get off at Uesugi-jinja-mae and walk about 3 minutes. The Five-Storied Pagoda of Mt. Haguro - by bus from JR Tsuruoka Station. Honzan Jionji - about a 25-minute walk from Uzen-Takamatsu Station on the JR Aterazawa Line.
• Parking: In addition to parking for about 40 cars, Honzan Jionji offers a second car park a 15-minute walk away (38 spaces) and the Jionji Terrace car park (40 spaces). Kumano Taisha also has a car park for worshippers. At Yamadera, use the paid car parks around the trailhead.
• Etiquette for worship: Yamadera is a place of ascetic training reached by 1,015 stone steps. Please be considerate and refrain from sitting on the steps or the edges of the halls, or from blocking the paths while taking photographs. The cedar avenue on Mt. Haguro is a Special Natural Monument of Japan, and stepping onto the roots or damaging the trunks is strictly prohibited.
• Photography rules: Flying drones is prohibited at Yamadera Risshakuji. Whether Buddhist statues may be photographed inside temple halls such as Jionji is set by each temple, so please always follow the signs and guidance on site. Do not use a tripod anywhere it would obstruct other visitors.
• Safety notes: The stone steps at Yamadera are natural stone with an uneven surface and become extremely slippery in rain or snow. Wear non-slip shoes and walk on the side with the handrail. In winter there is a risk of slipping on frozen surfaces. The approach on Mt. Haguro also has a long flight of stone steps, and particular care is needed on the way down.

* The conservation and repair work on the shingled roof of the National Treasure Five-Storied Pagoda of Mt. Haguro has already been completed, and the pagoda can now be seen without its protective covering.
