① Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine — A Mystical Space of Moss and Stone Pavement

Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine Headquarters, enshrined in Akanuma, Hiroomote, Akita City, is a mountain-worship shrine with its inner sanctuary atop the sacred peak of Mt. Taihei. The towering cedar trees and moss-covered approach are an overwhelmingly photogenic sight. Amid the dim filtered light, the green of the moss on the stone pavement creates a dreamlike atmosphere.

• Photography highlight: Capturing the green approach in a vertical angle creates depth, producing a shot like the entrance to another world.
• Best time: Soft morning light from 8:00–10:00. After rain, the moss glows vividly and is even more recommended.

• Best time: 14:00–15:00, when dappled sunlight through the leaves is at its most beautiful.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening / worship hours and closing days: At all of them the outdoor precincts are open for worship, but the reception hours of the shrine offices and amulet counters are limited. The reception at Karamatsu Shrine is open 9:00-16:00 with no regular closing day. For goshuin stamps and prayer rituals at Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine Sohongu and Shinzan Shrine, please check with the shrine office in advance.
• Admission: Worship within the precincts is free of charge at all four shrines.
• Access: Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine Sohongu = 3-2 Akanuma, Hiroomote, Akita City, about 10 minutes by car from JR Akita Station. Kanaashi Shrine = 3-1 and 4 Nihonmatsu, Kanaashi Takaoka, Akita City. Shinzan Shrine = 97 Mizukuizawa, Kitaura Shinzan, Oga City. Karamatsu Shrine = 84 Shimodai, Kyowa Sakai, Daisen City, about a 15-minute walk from Ugo-Sakai Station on the JR Ou Main Line (about 10 minutes from the Kyowa IC on the Akita Expressway).
• Parking: Karamatsu Shrine has parking for 20 cars. The other three shrines also have parking spaces for worshippers, but the number is limited, so consider using public transport at New Year and during annual festivals.
• Etiquette for worship: Karamatsu Shrine is a shrine visited by worshippers from all over Japan praying for safe childbirth and for the blessing of children. Please be very considerate about pointing your camera into the shrine hall while prayer rituals are in progress. Shinzan Shrine is a place of living faith where the Namahage rites are still carried out; do not enter the shrine buildings or the areas used for rituals without permission.
• Photography rules: Refrain from taking photographs inside the shrine halls or the amulet counters, or check with the shrine office. Avoid photographing during prayer rituals and Shinto ceremonies, and avoid shots in which other worshippers appear. Set up tripods only where they will not block the approach path. Commercial photography for magazines, advertising or product shoots requires prior permission.
• Safety notes: The inner sanctuary (okumiya) of Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine stands on the summit of the sacred Mount Taihei, in a separate location from the satomiya (foot-of-the-mountain shrine). Climbing there requires full mountaineering gear and planning, and heading up in light clothing is dangerous. The area around Shinzan Shrine is forested mountain terrain, and sightings and appearances of Asiatic black bears continue across Akita Prefecture. Avoid going alone early in the morning or at dusk, and walk while making noise with a bear bell or a radio. In winter, snow and ice make the stone steps of the approach extremely slippery.
