Narita-san and Sawara Old Town One-Day Course

This classic route links two of northeastern Chibas finest sights in a single day: the grand temple of Naritasan Shinshoji and the canal town of Sawara. Pair solemn worship with a stroll through a water town full of Edo-era charm. Both are reachable by a single train line, making this a great first trip to Chiba.

Course Route

9:00 Start at JR Narita Station Walk the Omotesando approach toward Naritasan Shinshoji. The roughly ten-minute slope is lined with souvenir shops and eel restaurants, lively even in the morning.

9:20 Worship at Naritasan Shinshoji This head temple of the Shingon Chisan school is said to have been founded in the year 940. Offer a prayer at the main hall, then take time to see the three-storied pagoda, the Nio Gate, and the Shaka-do, all important cultural properties. The Naritasan Park behind the grounds is lovely for a walk.

11:00 Eel lunch on the Omotesando Head back to the approach and a famous eel restaurant. An early lunch keeps the wait short. Afterward, pick up senbei or yokan from long-established shops.

12:30 Take the Narita Line to Sawara From Narita Station, the JR Narita Line reaches Sawara Station in about 30 minutes.

13:10 Stroll old-town Sawara Walk about ten minutes from the station to the Ono River. The rows of merchant storehouses form the first townscape in the Kanto region to be designated a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

14:00 Sawara canal boat ride Board a wooden boat along the Ono River and watch the townhouses from the water. The boatmans narration adds to the mood.

15:30 Ino Tadataka Memorial Museum Visit the former residence and museum of Ino Tadataka, the surveyor tied to Sawara, and close the day with a touch of local history.

Highlights

Naritasan Shinshoji is one of Japans most visited temples at New Year and a center of Fudo worship, dotted with important cultural properties. Sawara was a merchant town once praised as rivaling Edo, and its living commerce and waterside scenery remain its charm.

Access and Tips

Narita Station and Sawara Station are connected by the JR Narita Line with no transfer needed. Trains run only once or twice an hour, so check your return time and how long you want to stay in Sawara in advance. The boat ride may be suspended in poor weather.

A Quick Tip

The Narita approach is quiet in the morning and easier for photos. The Sawara boat ride needs no reservation, but weekends can mean a wait, so head to the dock early.
