5 Instagram-Worthy Power Spots in Chiba

Chiba Prefecture is scattered with spectacular power spots that will make you want to shout "I have to go there!" Ancient shrines, mystical torii gates, moss-covered stone steps — every place you point your camera tells a story. This article covers Iigaoka Hachimangu, Makata Shrine, Takabe Shrine, Kasamori Kannon and Oyama Senmaida.

1. Iigaoka Hachimangu (Ichihara City) | A Timeless Approach of Moss and Stone

4. Kasamori Kannon (Chonan Town) | Chiba's Premier Sacred Elevated Temple Perched on Massive Boulders

This ancient temple is said to have been founded by the Great Teacher Saicho (Dengyo Daishi) in Enryaku 3 (784). The Kannon-do hall, built in Chogen 1 (1028) by imperial decree of Emperor Goichijo, is "Japan's only four-sided hanging-style structure," designated a National Treasure in Meiji 41 (1908) and then a National Important Cultural Property in Showa 25 (1950). Its appearance towering above natural giant boulders is a truly one-of-a-kind sight.

• Best time and season: Early morning when mist lingers / From fresh greenery through summer when the greens are vivid
• Shooting angle: A horizontal composition taken from a point along the approach path some distance away, capturing the full view, works beautifully
• Access: 302 Kasamori, Chonan Town, Chosei County, Chiba Prefecture (Tel: 0475-46-0536). Reaching the Kannon-do requires climbing steep stone steps.

5. Oyama Senmaida (Kamogawa City) | Sky and Light Reflected in Terraced Rice Fields — Japan's Original Landscape

Selected as one of Japan's "100 Best Terraced Rice Fields," Oyama Senmaida (540 Hiratsuka, Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture) shows a completely different face with each season. At dusk, the moment the terraced water-field surfaces turn orange is breathtakingly beautiful. However, this is privately owned farmland actively in production. Visitors other than owners and related parties are asked not to enter the terraced fields themselves, and shooting from the ridge paths requires applying for membership in the preservation association. Please photograph only from roads or designated viewing areas.

• Best time and season: Golden hour (30 minutes before sunset) / May when the fields are flooded with water; during the "Tanada no Akari" illumination event (dates announced on the official website)
• Shooting angle: Shoot from a high vantage point looking down across the whole landscape — use a wide-angle composition to emphasize the sweeping curves of the terraces
• Access: Approx. 25-minute drive or taxi ride from JR Sotobo Line "Awa-Kamogawa Station" (free parking available; however, access for general visitors may be restricted on days when owners are working)

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Opening/worship hours and closed days: The worship hours of Kasamori Kannon vary by season and by event (during the New Year visit period it stays open continuously from 8:00 p.m. on December 31 until 4:00 p.m. on January 1, and from January 2 onward it is 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The surest approach is to call 0475-46-0536 before your visit.
• Admission: The official website of Kasamori Kannon does not state a regular-season worship fee, so please check on site or by phone. There is no charge to view the Oyama Senmaida rice terraces.
• Access: Kasamori Kannon is at 302 Kasamori, Chonan-machi, Chosei-gun, Chiba Prefecture. Oyama Senmaida is at 540 Hiratsuka, Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture, about 25 minutes by car or taxi from Awa-Kamogawa Station on the JR Sotobo Line.
• Parking: Oyama Senmaida has a free parking area, but general use is restricted on days when the terrace owners are working the fields (visitors are advised that parking is easier on weekdays).
• Etiquette when visiting: Oyama Senmaida is privately owned farmland and a working production site. Anyone other than the terrace owners and people involved in the work is asked to refrain from entering the terraces themselves. View them from the road or from designated spots so as not to disturb those working in the fields.
• Photography rules: Photographing from the ridges between the paddies at Oyama Senmaida requires an application to join the preservation society. You may not enter the ridges to take pictures without permission. Inside the Kannon-do hall of Kasamori Kannon, follow the notices posted on site regarding photography.
• Safety notes: The Kannon-do hall of Kasamori Kannon is a shiho-kakezukuri structure built on top of a huge rock, and you climb steep stairs to reach it. Use the handrails, and take particular care in wet weather. The roads around the rice terraces are narrow, and parking on the road is strictly prohibited because it blocks farm vehicles.
