This sea-focused course makes the most of the Sotobo area on the Pacific side of the Boso Peninsula. Centered on Kamogawa Sea World, famous nationwide for its orca performances, it pairs the aquarium with a fresh seafood lunch only a harbor town can offer. A perfect day for families and couples alike.

Course Route

9:00 Start at Kamogawa Sea World (about 3.5 hours here) Enter right at opening and first check the popular show schedule. Hours vary by day, but the park generally opens at 9:00 and closes somewhere between 16:00 and 17:00. Admission runs around 3,300 yen for adults (high school age and up), which includes the show viewing. The spacious park lines its exhibits along the coast, with a pleasant sea breeze.

9:30 Watch the orca performance The powerful orca jumps are a must-see. Front-row seats get splashed, so choosing where to sit is part of the fun. Follow up with the dolphin and sea lion shows. Show times are fixed, so check the schedule right after entering and decide your order of visits.

11:30 See the belugas and penguins Visit the charming white belugas and the waddling penguins. The close-up exhibits are a real draw.

12:30 Seafood lunch in the harbor town (about 1 hour) At restaurants inside or near the park, enjoy a seafood rice bowl or sashimi set made with locally landed fish. Sotobo is known for golden-eye snapper and horse mackerel, and a budget of around 1,500 yen or more per person is a good guide.

14:00 Stroll the Kamogawa shore After lunch, walk along the coast and take in the wide Pacific horizon. In good weather, tide-pool exploring is a treat.

15:30 Souvenir hunting at the Katsuura and Kamogawa harbors Look for dried fish and local seafood products to close out the day in true fishing-town style.

Highlights

Kamogawa Sea World is one of Japans largest marine entertainment facilities and a rare aquarium where you can meet orcas. The Sotobo harbor towns thrive on fishing fed by the Kuroshio current, with seasonal catches changing through the year.

Access and Tips

By rail, Awa-Kamogawa Station on the JR Sotobo Line is closest, with a free shuttle bus from the station. By car, you can reach it via the Tateyama Expressway, and parking is available. Show times are fixed, so check the schedule right after entering and plan your day around it.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Best season and time: Indoor exhibits make this a spot that holds up well in any weather. To watch the shows at a relaxed pace, arrive in the morning right after opening.
  • Avoiding crowds: Spring and summer holidays and long weekends get busy. For the popular orca show, take a seat about 15 minutes before it starts to secure a good spot even in front.
  • Time needed: Touring the exhibits and enjoying the shows takes about 3 to 4 hours. With lunch and a shore walk, it easily fills a full day.
  • Nearby real spots: A short drive opens up Sotobo sights such as the Katsuura morning market and Nijiemonjima island off Kamogawa.
  • Budget guide: Admission plus a seafood lunch and souvenirs comes to roughly 5,000 to 7,000 yen per adult.

A Quick Tip

Front-row seats at the orca show get thoroughly soaked. If you want to stay dry, sit toward the back; if you want the full impact, bring a towel or rain gear and take a front seat for comfort. Since the seat you pick shapes the experience, splitting roles within a family or group is a fun way to go.
