Nokogiriyama Views and Minamiboso Coast Course

This scenic course stars Mount Nokogiri in Futtsu City, on the inner-bay side of the Boso Peninsula facing Tokyo Bay. Ride the ropeway straight up to see the cliff-edge Hell Peek lookout and the great Buddha. Combined with the food of the port town of Kanaya, you can enjoy both sea and mountain in a single day.

Course Route

9:00 Start at JR Hamakanaya Station Get off at Hamakanaya Station on the Uchibo Line. The base station of the Nokogiriyama Ropeway is about an eight-minute walk away, passing through the seaside town.

9:30 Ride the ropeway to the summit A roughly four-minute aerial trip carries you to the top. Tokyo Bay spreads out below, and on clear days you can see across to the Miura Peninsula and even Mount Fuji.

10:00 Nihon-ji Temple and Hell Peek Enter the grounds of Nihon-ji on the summit. The Hell Peek observation platform juts out from the cliff into thin air for a real thrill. The great Buddha, one of Japans largest cliff-carved statues, and the Hyakushaku Kannon are also impressive.

12:30 Lunch in the port town of Kanaya Come down to the harbor town. Kanaya is known for golden horse mackerel, and local diners serve it freshly fried alongside other seafood.

14:00 Stroll The Fish and Kanaya port Wander the souvenir complex and the area around the fishing port, taking in the Tokyo Bay scenery.

15:00 Enjoy the Tokyo Bay Ferry views If time allows, board the Tokyo Bay Ferry from Kanaya port for a view from the water.

Highlights

Mount Nokogiri once thrived as a quarry for Boshu stone, and its sheer rock faces create a striking landscape. The summit Hell Peek is among Bosos finest viewpoints. The great Buddha at Nihon-ji stands about 31 meters tall, one of the largest in Japan.

Access and Tips

Ropeway hours vary by season, roughly from 9:00 until evening. Closing is earlier in winter, so plan accordingly. The summit has many stairs and slopes, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Admission to Nihon-ji costs a separate fee.

A Quick Tip

Hell Peek is a popular photo spot and can mean a line when crowded. Climbing early in the morning is relatively quiet and lets you take your time with photos. On windy days, watch your footing carefully near the rocky edges.
