Asuwa Shrine: A 1,500-Year-Old Ancestral Power Spot Watching Over Fukui
Asuwa Shrine
Standing atop Mount Asuwa in the heart of Fukui City, Asuwa Shrine is known as an ancestral deity of the Echizen region with over 1,500 years of history. Its main deity is Emperor Keitai, said to have founded Echizen, and locals affectionately call the shrine Asuwa-san. Though not a major tourist site, it is a venerable, lesser-known power spot that has watched over the town of Fukui for ages.
Highlights
- A main hall enshrining Emperor Keitai and five Ikasuri deities - Famous for its leg protection charm, for ailments, injuries, and athletic improvement - A wide range of blessings, including business prosperity, construction safety, warding off misfortune, blessing of children, and safe childbirth - A sacred weeping cherry tree over a century old, stunning in spring
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring the weeping cherry on the grounds is magnificent, and the whole Mount Asuwa area turns pink, making it a popular spot for blossom viewing. In summer the greenery is deep and the shade pleasant, and in autumn red leaves color the precinct. In winter a snow-clad shrine shows a quiet beauty, offering a different face in each season. The spring cherry season is especially loved by locals.
