Course Route
10:00 Start at JR Hakata Station Begin at Hakata Station, the gateway to the city. The station building is full of souvenirs and dining, so make a note of places to revisit on your way home.
10:30 Visit Kushida Shrine Head to Kushida Shrine, beloved as the guardian shrine of Hakata. Locals call it Okushida san, and it is famous as the stage of the summer Gion Yamakasa festival.
12:00 Lunch with tonkotsu ramen Enjoy a bowl of Hakata ramen with its very thin noodles and rich pork bone broth. Ordering kaedama, a refill of noodles only, is a way of eating born in Hakata, so be sure to try it.
14:00 Stroll through Canal City Hakata Wander through this complex built around a canal. Shopping and the fountain show make for a pleasant walk to settle your meal.
18:00 Dinner with motsunabe Try Hakata motsunabe at a well known shop in the Tenjin area. The soy or miso broth and plump offal are superb, so finish every drop down to the closing champon noodles.
20:00 Finish at the night yatai Head to the food stalls lined up in Nakasu and Tenjin. Sip a drink with ramen, oden, or gyoza, and enjoy chatting with locals in a way only the yatai can offer.
