Mojiko Retro Strolling Course
Facing the Kanmon Strait, Mojiko is a port town that once thrived as an international trade harbor. Red brick western style buildings and a drawbridge line the waterfront, making you feel as if you have slipped back into the Meiji and Taisho eras. This half day course strolls through the retro streets while you enjoy the local baked curry. It takes about four hours and suits lovers of retro architecture and photography or anyone who wants a leisurely walk.
Course Route
10:00 Start at JR Mojiko Station The journey begins at the restored and stately Mojiko Station. The classic station building is itself a sight and perfect for a souvenir photo.
10:30 Tour the former Moji Customs House Head to the red brick former Moji Customs House built in the late Meiji era. Enjoy the exhibits and cafe inside, and take in a full view of the Kanmon Strait from the observation room.
11:30 Cross the Blue Wing Moji Cross the pedestrian only drawbridge. It rises several times a day, and a romantic legend says the first couple to cross after it closes will be united.
12:30 Lunch with the local baked curry This Mojiko specialty tops rice with curry, cheese, and egg before baking it in the oven. The fragrant browned surface and the aroma of spices are irresistible.
14:00 Stroll the harbor promenade Walk along the waterfront feeling the sea breeze. Watching the passing ships and the opposite shore, you sense the relaxed time that flows through a port town.
