Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Pilgrimage Course

🍜 Fukuoka|June 26, 2026

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Pilgrimage Course

Dazaifu Tenmangu, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, is one of Fukuoka prime landmarks. Snack on umegae mochi along the lively sando, and after your visit enjoy a relaxed walk to the Kyushu National Museum. The course takes about four hours and suits families with students preparing for exams or anyone who loves visiting shrines.

Course Route

10:00 Start at Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station Arrive by train and head to the sando that stretches from the station front. Passing through the large torii gate on your right marks the start of your Dazaifu walk.

10:15 Snack along the sando Souvenir shops and cafes line both sides of the sando. Freshly grilled umegae mochi is crisp outside and chewy within, and you can buy just one to taste.

11:00 Pray at Dazaifu Tenmangu Offer your prayers at the main hall. Stroking the head of the sacred ox is said to grant wisdom, and many visitors reach out to do so. The plum trees in the grounds are another highlight.

12:00 Rest at a cafe in the grounds After praying, take a break at a cafe set among the greenery around the grounds. Tea enjoyed in the dappled sunlight is something special.

13:00 Tour the Kyushu National Museum Pass through the access tunnel that leads from behind the shrine to the museum. The exhibits, which trace Japanese history through exchange with Asia, are well worth seeing.

14:00 Finish with souvenir shopping Return to the sando once more before heading home. Choose souvenirs unique to Dazaifu, such as umegae mochi, charms, or local sweets.

Highlights

- The fragrant signature umegae mochi served fresh off the grill - The sacred ox said to grant wisdom - Plum blossoms in full bloom in the grounds in spring - Exhibits at the Kyushu National Museum tracing exchange with Asia

Access and Tips

- It is well connected, about 30 minutes by train from Nishitetsu Fukuoka Tenjin Station - The sando gets crowded, so an early morning hour lets you walk more freely - The shrine connects directly to the Kyushu National Museum by an access tunnel, making the move easy - Umegae mochi tastes slightly different at each shop, so comparing them is part of the fun

A Quick Tip

Dazaifu involves relatively short walking distances and is easy to take at a leisurely pace. If you wish for academic success, do not forget an ema or a charm. Save some room in your stomach to enjoy snacking along the sando.
