Itoshima's Scenic Coastline β A Resort Area of Beautiful Sea and Sunsets
Just 30 minutes west of central Fukuoka, Itoshima feels like a different world β a peninsula where rice paddies meet white-sand beaches, and where cafe culture, craft workshops, and dramatic sunsets have turned a quiet farming and fishing community into one of Kyushu's most beloved weekend escapes.
Highlights
Itoshima's coastline stretches along Shima Peninsula, offering a succession of beaches and scenic headlands. Futamigaura Beach is home to Sakurai Futami Shrine's iconic meoto iwa β a pair of wedded rocks connected by a sacred shimenawa rope, framing the sunset in a composition that photographers and romantics pursue year-round. The Itoshima craft scene flourishes in converted farm buildings: glassblowers, potters, leatherworkers, and coffee roasters have set up studios along the coastal roads, many open on weekends. In summer, beach clubs and seafood shacks populate the shore. The local oyster season (October to March) brings out pop-up grilling huts where freshly harvested oysters are served with lemon and ponzu on oil-drum barbecues. Rice terraces shimmer gold in September.
Getting There & Tips
From Fukuoka's Meinohama Station, the JR Chikuhi Line runs to Chikuzen-Maebaru and Shimachu, giving access to different parts of the peninsula. Renting a bicycle or car is strongly recommended, as the beaches and studios are spread across a wide area. Parking is available at most beaches for a small fee. The area becomes very busy in summer; midweek visits are calmer.
Best Time to Visit
Oyster season (OctoberβMarch) is arguably the most delicious time to visit. Summer (JulyβAugust) is ideal for beach swimming. The sunset over wedded rocks is beautiful year-round but most atmospheric in winter when the air is crisp and the horizon clear. Spring brings wildflowers to the coastal paths.
