Aizu-Wakamatsu, Tsurugajo Castle and Mt. Bandai โ History and Majestic Nature of Fukushima
Aizu-Wakamatsu, Tsurugajo Castle and Mt. Bandai
The Aizu region of western Fukushima Prefecture combines two of Tohoku's most compelling attractions within a landscape of mountains, lakes, and preserved samurai heritage that makes it one of the most historically and scenically rich destinations in northeastern Japan. Aizu-Wakamatsu city, centered on its proud castle and samurai traditions, and the volcanic Mt. Bandai highlands with their extraordinary lake and pond landscapes, are natural complements for a journey through Fukushima's mountain interior.
Highlights
Tsurugajo Castle (Crane Castle), with its distinctive red-tiled roof restored in 2011, is the emotional center of Aizu โ a city that experienced some of the most dramatic and tragic events of Japan's 19th-century civil war. The castle's museum tells the story of the Aizu domain's doomed loyalty to the Tokugawa shogunate and the legendary Byakkotai (White Tiger Corps) teenage samurai. The castle grounds are magnificent for cherry blossoms in late April.
Mt. Bandai (1,816 meters) and the Urabandai highland created by its catastrophic 1888 eruption form a volcanic landscape of extraordinary variety. Lake Inawashiro โ Japan's fourth largest lake โ lies at the mountain's southern foot, its brilliant blue water reflecting the peak's symmetrical profile. To the north, the Urabandai plateau holds over 300 lakes and ponds, including the Goshikinuma multi-colored ponds and Lake Hibara.
The Bandai-Azuma Skyline (toll road) traverses the volcanic highlands east of Bandai, passing through moonscape lava fields and offering views across the full Fukushima interior.
