Nigorigo Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices (Gifu)

Deep behind Gero City on the flank of Mount Ontake, Nigorigo Onsen is a lofty hidden spring welling up at about 1,800 meters. Set in the high mountains near the clouds, its iron-rich, cloudy water is the origin of its name. Surrounded by primeval forest, it is a mountain spring where you can forget the noise of the city.

You drive up the mountain road from the Osaka district of Gero City. The road is narrow with many one-lane stretches, so it is reassuring to visit with plenty of time to spare. As direct public transport is limited, arriving by car is the norm. In winter, measures for snow and ice are essential.

At the center of the spring there is a municipal open-air bath, open only for a season that runs roughly from late April to early November. It closes in winter, so if you are aiming for day bathing in that period, be sure to check the operating season. Day-use bathing costs several hundred yen as a guide. Because of the high elevation, mornings and evenings are chilly even in summer, so a jacket is reassuring. To enjoy the stars, a clear night with little moonlight is best. If combining with a climb or walk on Mount Ontake, note that mountain weather changes readily.

The nearest stations are Hida-Osaka Station or Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line, and a taxi from Hida-Osaka Station takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and costs around 12,000 to 13,000 yen. Taxis are limited in number, so book 5 days to a week in advance
• Winter road conditions: Outside the operating season the mountain road is snowy and icy. If you are visiting in winter to stay overnight, be sure to check with your inn about road conditions beforehand

It opens only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with bathing from 10:30 to 21:00 (reception until 20:30), and is closed Monday to Thursday. It costs 900 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary school students, and is free for children below elementary school age, with free parking for 100 cars
