Nigorigo Onsen

Deep behind Gero City on the flank of Mount Ontake, Nigorigo Onsen is a lofty hidden spring welling up at about 1,800 meters. Set in the high mountains near the clouds, its iron-rich, cloudy water is the origin of its name.

Highlights

From the open-air baths surrounded by sweeping nature you can taste clear air and deep quiet. It is also one of the trailheads for climbing Mount Ontake, and at night a sky full of stars can be expected.

Enjoying the Seasons

Cool even in summer, it is popular as a retreat from the heat, and autumn brings splendid foliage. Because of the high elevation, winter snow is deep and road conditions call for care.

Access and Basic Information

You drive up the mountain road from Osaka district of Gero City. The road is narrow with many one-lane stretches, so it is reassuring to visit with plenty of time to spare.
