Tochio Onsen: Hot Spring Guide, Prices & Access (Gifu)

Welling up in the valley where the Kamata River meets a mountain stream, Tochio Onsen is the hot spring in Okuhida that most strongly keeps the rustic feel of a wild bath. Wrapped in the murmur of the river and the quiet of the mountains, it suits a journey of easygoing bath hopping. It has no flashiness, but its plain, settled air is the charm.

Access and Basic Information

Access is by Nohi Bus from Takayama Station toward Shinhotaka, taking about an hour and a half. By car it lies along National Route 471, on the way to Shinhirayu and Shinhotaka. It is easy to drop into on the way around Okuhida.

The riverside shared open-air bath Kojin-no-Yu is a simple spring usable for a donation (roughly a few hundred yen), with a plain setup of just a changing room and open-air bath. On some days of the week it cannot be used in the morning due to cleaning, so checking the hours before you drop by is reassuring. Although the men's and women's baths are separate, the open layout means having a towel ready lets you bathe more at ease. Being able to drop in casually for the day is Tochio's appeal, well suited to pausing at a footbath or open-air bath while driving around Okuhida. If you stay overnight, you can savor the quiet mountain village at night.

Stop by on the way around Okuhida and take a breather at a shared open-air bath or footbath. As the shared bath has only minimal facilities, bring a towel and keep some coins ready for the donation.

Kojin-no-yu (public open-air bath)

• Type of facility: An unstaffed bathing facility with nothing but separate men's and women's changing rooms and open-air baths. There are no indoor baths and no sauna

• Indications: The indications listed for this type of water are cuts, poor peripheral circulation, sensitivity to cold, depressive states and dry skin

• Access (by bus): About 80 minutes from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on a bus bound for Shinhotaka Onsen, getting off at "Kami-Tochio," then a 3-minute walk
• Highlight: Fireflies dance along the adjoining firefly channel, usually around early July

• How long to allow: 30 minutes to 1 hour for a bath alone, or 1 to 2 hours including the footbath and a stroll along the river
