Mt. Kurai — Hida's Sacred Mountain Power Spot with Heavenly Rock Formations

Mt. Kurai, rising 1,529 meters above the Hida highlands of northern Gifu Prefecture, is one of Japan's most distinctive sacred mountains — not for its height but for the extraordinary granite rock formations that crown its summit, known as the Tenjoseki (Heavenly Rocks). These formations, sculpted by millennia of freeze-thaw weathering, create a landscape of bizarre and beautiful natural architecture that has inspired mountain worship for centuries.

The summit plateau of Mt. Kurai is scattered with granite boulders of remarkable scale and shape — some balanced improbably, others stacked in formations that suggest deliberate arrangement, all of them worn to smooth curves by centuries of alpine weather. The largest, Kuraishi, is venerated as the mountain's spiritual heart and surrounded by small shrine structures that accumulated over generations of pilgrimage. Standing among these rocks, with views extending across the Hida basin to the Northern Alps on clear days, the sense of being in a genuinely sacred space is powerful.

The Kurai plateau is also celebrated as one of Japan's finest locations for stargazing: the combination of altitude, inland position, and sparse local population creates sky darkness of extraordinary quality. The annual Hoshizora Kuraishi Festival, held in summer on the plateau, celebrates this celestial environment with community events that draw visitors from across the Chubu region.

The surrounding Hida highlands support ancient beech forest that turns brilliant in October, making autumn ascents particularly rewarding.

Getting There & Tips

Access by car from Gero Onsen or Hida-Osaka via mountain roads. The summit is approximately 45 minutes on foot from the plateau parking area. No public transport directly serves the mountain; car access is essential.

Best Time to Visit

July to August for summer stargazing events. October for autumn foliage. Snow can linger until May on the summit plateau.
