Set at the center of the Okuhida hot spring villages, Shinhirayu Onsen is a lively hot spring street where inns large and small gather. Proud of its abundant flow, it offers the pleasure of touring a variety of distinctive open-air baths. Within Okuhida it is well provided with inns and eateries, making it an easy base for a stay.

Highlights

Nearby attractions such as the Maou Falls and the Taruma Falls make for easy walks. At night the lamp-lit hot spring street is wrapped in a calm and settled atmosphere. In winter, an event that freezes the Taruma Falls and lights them up is a local specialty.

Enjoying the Seasons

Streams and greenery in summer, foliage in autumn, and snow with open-air baths in winter let you enjoy mountain-village scenery that changes its face with each season. The winter ice light-up is a sight unique to this spring town.

Access and Basic Information

Access is by Nohi Bus from Takayama Station toward Shinhotaka. The trip takes a little over an hour, and the hot spring street has several bus stops. By car you take National Routes 158 and 471 from the Takayama Interchange. Sitting near the middle of Okuhida, it is also convenient for reaching Hirayu and Shinhotaka.

Practical Travel Notes

The winter specialty, the Taruma frozen-ice light-up, is held at night each year from roughly year's end into late February, and the frozen falls and the illumination inside the erosion-control tunnel are dreamlike. You can enjoy a quiet face of the hot spring town different from the daytime. Some inns accept day bathers, with prices from several hundred to around a thousand yen as a guide, though availability and hours differ by inn, so checking in advance is wise. Making use of its near-central position in Okuhida, a loop combined with Hirayu Onsen and the Shinhotaka Ropeway is recommended. In winter, visit dressed and equipped for snow.

A Quick Tip

Each inn has its own character of waters, so it is fun to choose a place by the open-air bath that appeals to you. If visiting in winter, check the light-up dates and enjoy an evening stroll too.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Spring quality of the resort: A simple hot spring (hot spring resort data from the Japan Spa Association). It is said to be good for autonomic nervous instability, insomnia and depressive states, as well as chronic muscle and joint pain, sensitivity to cold and recovery from fatigue
  • National Health Resort Hot Spring: It is designated as such as part of the Okuhida Onsen-go hot spring villages
  • Day-use bathing (Okuhida Garden Hotel Yakedake): 12:00 to 22:00 (last reception 21:00), 900 yen per person, free for children below elementary school age. The hours may change depending on how busy it is and during long holiday periods, so it is safest to check on the day
  • How the hotel uses its water: There are 4 private sources on the grounds. The mixed-gender open-air bath "Uguisu-no-yu" is free-flowing straight from the source
  • Towels: The hotel sells hand towels for 200 yen and rents bath towels for 200 yen, so you can drop in empty-handed
  • Bathing wear to borrow: Bathing wear for the mixed-gender open-air bath is lent free of charge
  • Parking: The hotel has a car park reserved for day-use bathers
  • Access (by bus): About 74 to 80 minutes from JR Takayama Station or the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on a local bus bound for Shinhotaka Onsen, getting off at the "Shin-Hirayu Onsen" bus stop. The hot spring town has several bus stops, so checking the nearest stop to your inn when you book will save confusion
  • Access (by car): About 110 minutes from the Matsumoto Interchange on the Nagano Expressway via National Route 158
  • Winter event: The Taruma Kanekori illumination runs from 17:00 to 21:30 and is free to view. It is about a 7-minute walk from the "Shin-Hirayu Onsen" bus stop, with parking for large buses and ordinary cars
  • Winter road conditions: This is a high-altitude hot spring resort in the mountains, and there is snow and ice in winter. If you are driving, winter equipment such as studless tires is necessary
  • How long to allow: About 1 hour for day-use bathing alone. If you combine it with the Shinhotaka Ropeway or Hirayu Onsen, allow a full day to be comfortable
  • Address: Okuhida Onsen-go, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture (Okuhida Garden Hotel Yakedake is at 2498-1 Hitoegane)
